Televangelist Joel Osteen cancelled services at his Houston megachurch Sunday and has yet to reopen its doors despite the fact that thousands of flooded-out residents are desperately seeking shelter.
The perpetually smiling pastor told followers on Twitter on Monday to lean on their faith.
Jesus promises us peace that passes understanding, he wrote. Thats peace when it doesnt make sense.
But Osteens comforting words didnt sit well with critics, who want to know why the doors to his 16,800-seat arena at his Lakewood Church near downtown Houston are closed.
You have taken so much money away from your people to live like a king, entertainment publicist Danny Deraney blasted. Its the least you could do.

Yes, the Holy Spirit checks bank accounts first!

So I guess it takes a flood of Biblical proportions to close the “Church of What’s Happenin’ Now.”
Could be up at Eagle Pass Casino with the Mayor of Houston trying to relax and unwind.
The Prosperity Gospel is a one way street - usually flowing in the direction of the celebrity pastor.
Osteen and his trollop wife are still both charlatans! Just think, this "inconvenient storm" probably slowed down his pitch for money for a new jet or some other extravigance!
Dang ‘Hound, you are at full throttle on this thread! I love it!
They take money from poor people who can't even afford their medication but actually believe that "Prosperity Gospel" garbage and hope that by filling their collection plate, they'll be able to.
Instead it fuels their jet, buys them and their kids new Mercedes, and takes them to resorts they can't even pronounce.
And by the way that's the last time Vicky was allowed to eat Chipotle before services...
First of all, an auditorium -- no matter its size -- is the wrong sort of place to house people who need to sleep, etc. The floors are usually sloping, and the floorspace is taken up with bolted-down seating.
HOWEVER, I can''t believe that a church that size doesn't have a sizeable gym or other sports/recreational/"fellowship" facility. Even our church in a 5K-population town in far northeastern Texas has what we call our "Family Life Center" -- a large, open building with basketball courts, that also serves (with folding chairs and tables) as a dining, gathering and "fellowship" space for our entire congregation. As such, it also has a nice, large kitchen and large restrooms.
For several weeks,we hosted several busloads of Katrina refugees there, and we brought in emergency shower trailers to help with hygiene.
Yes, there was a bit of a mess, and the gym floors had to be refinished -- but a local business donated that service.
Bottom line: we met what needs we could --- with what we had, and we all pitched in to help -- with whatever we could contribute.
IF (and that's a real "IF") there is a need for additional shelter that's not being met, Houston officials should ask Osteen's congregation (not necessarily him) if their recreation facility could be used for shelter..
Then, IF Osteen refuses to allow that service -- then, there is an opportunity to point fingers and throw accusations -- and the opportunity for his congregation to toss him out onto the street.
Yep and it is a joke how many of our very own FReepers fall for this fraud’s crap!!!!!! Brain dead....no other reason ‘Hound.
His church is not flooded. It’s doing just fine. Several cars in the damp parking lot. The streets surrounding the church are not flooded either.
True dat.
Your best life now.
Bkmk
Ty for the context.
I share the same hope.
I beg to differ. President Trump is being assaulted by the left for two reasons: (1)He stands against the globalist liberal agenda; and (2)He beat Hillary Clinton in an election that the establishment wanted her to win.
In contrast, Joel Osteen is a highly-successful prosperity preacher who twists the Gospel of Jesus Christ to suit his means, in order to fleece thousands of willing and sometimes desperately poor Christians out of millions of dollars.
President Trump earned his billions. Joel Osteen bleeds the bank accounts of the poor dry. See the difference?
“President Trump earned his billions. Joel Osteen bleeds the bank accounts of the poor dry. See the difference?”
You’re changing the subject and I’m not arguing that.
Osteen’s arena (I am loathe to call it a ‘church’) is partially flooded and it’s in a flooded area. The building is currently unfit to occupy so launching accusations at the man because he won’t let people enter a building that’s not fit to occupy is the exact same kind of nonsensical logic the left uses with their accusations against President Trump.
If you want to discuss Osteen’s heresies, his apostasies, and his questionable (but apparently legal) financial arrangements then I’m your girl.
But he is not to blame for the flood ruining his arena and he’s not to blame for refusing to allow his arena to become a hellhole like the Astrodome became back in 2005.
