Televangelist Joel Osteen cancelled services at his Houston megachurch Sunday and has yet to reopen its doors despite the fact that thousands of flooded-out residents are desperately seeking shelter.
The perpetually smiling pastor told followers on Twitter on Monday to lean on their faith.
Jesus promises us peace that passes understanding, he wrote. Thats peace when it doesnt make sense.
But Osteens comforting words didnt sit well with critics, who want to know why the doors to his 16,800-seat arena at his Lakewood Church near downtown Houston are closed.
You have taken so much money away from your people to live like a king, entertainment publicist Danny Deraney blasted. Its the least you could do.

If you are suggesting fishes and loaves should suffice for inviting thousands of people into an unprepared unstaffed building with no supplies simply because it is a church, then by all means please - open your home to refugees
Osteen ( I do not even listen to him ) has done more for flood victims in the past than anyone trying to accuse him not reacting yet to this crisis - which is still in the middle of the storm
Eh...there all about the same to me...send me/God your dollars and all is well.
The sanctuary might not be the best place in the world and so what? When fervent Christians band together we watch God do miracles.
I think God is about to show and tell Joel that his fortunes are all washed up.
I agree with you. Many here would not open their homes/businesses to evacuees due to taking their buildings and lives in danger. All we have to do is look back at what happened during Katrina, thank you, and times now are less caring and more drugged.
I am not a Joel fan. I did go to the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration which was amazing. A cousin of mine was healed at that church so I cannot deny that The Holy Spirit is there.
The city has a facility for the evacuees to go where they have means to care for them, police them, etc.
As our governor said, It’s not the time to second guess things, just get back to normal and we can do that in Texas!
Psalm 138...Amen!
I agree 100%. Like him or hate him, a little logical thought here will go a long way.
The ‘Prosperity Gospel’ works for certain preachers but not necessarily their flock.
It doesn’t quite work like that. Rather, put your all on God’s altar, right where it is now, and watch God do miracles.
You mean worldly, filled with worldly excuses.
Well said ‘wolf. He is a fraud pure and simple. What is really sick about his act is just how many people this con artist has fooled. Pathetic really that so many are so easily snowed.
Strange...no matter what...they all need that dollar
.
Are you a bit confused?
Can it be that he just doesn’t wish to give shelter to any refugees?

He who gives out of excess reaps little. Remember the widow and her mites. You present a profound non sequitur. And you have no idea what I have yielded to God or why. You might be surprised to see I went bust twice over it. How about packing away your own stone bag.
I’m no big fan of his, but don’t understand the bashing here. He’s supposed to turn his church and facilities into a shelter and let it be damaged as the Superdome was in New Orleans?? I don’t get this. No fan of this guy but don’t get why he’s being bashed over this flood.
Then God can tell Joel Osteen what to do. Not really any else’s business unless there is a request from the government and need.
.
Likely.

God hasn’t been able to tell Joel anything, as far as I can see.
.
Here’s a chance for you to show yourself redeemed. What did you ever yield up to God, smartass?
And fair enough.
Now what has God been able to tell you, you arrogant self smartness worshiper?
