Every family's history holds its secrets, for good and for bad.
For comedian Chelsea Handler, the biggest questions lay with the fact that her maternal grandfather fought for the Nazi regime in World War II.
In a new episode of TLC's Who Do You Think You Are, Handler, 38, discovers exactly what role her grandfather, Karl Stoecker, played in one of history's most atrocious genocides.
And growing up, Handler had no idea that her grandfather - a 'very, very strong man' she describes as having a 'sense of humour' - had a dark past.
In the episode, she reveals that he was taken as a prisoner of war to America, where he likely stayed in Montana for several years.
'When he went back to Germany, he was very eager to come and take his family and move them back to the United States,' Handler says.

I saw the episode when it aired. I’m surprised she didn’t try to get that segment taken out of the program like Ben Afflack got PBS, and Louis Gates, Jr., to remove the part about his ancestor who owned slaves.
Ha ha ha ha ha THIS is just too rich!! A Nazi!!? A real Nazi not a Nazi because he was a registered Republican but a real Nazi that helped murder millions of innocent people because of who they were. She should be shunned and no one should ever go to see whatever it is that she does.
She is not bright. She is politically and probably socially pathetic but the NAZI identity of her grandfather is irrelevant to all that and is useful only if she brings up someone else’s ancestry as a reason for disparagement.
In accordance with liberal canon law, she must burn that photograph of her grandfather.
Exactly.
I’m a yankee with a tremendous level of respect for the southern culture, one that we don’t share in the north.
It saddens me to see these northern liberal elites forcing their twisted opinion on the entire country and telling us we should all live like they do in Manhattan.
My family heritage was in Kentucky during the Civil War. I don’t know but assume those who fought did so for the South.
The geneology had one reference to a slave being left in someone’s will back in 1750 or something in Maryland.
“Apple didnt fall far from the tree.”
- Exactly what I was going to say!
Gosh - she obviously owes the Jews a lot of reparations.....
Ok, Handler, we’re waiting for you to kill yourself, now. Thanks.
Sigh. Go ahead and keep fighting fire with a pillow. Let’s see how that works out.
My Grandpa fought in the Battle of the Bulge and brought a lot of Nazi memorabilia home. I was a teen when he died and Grandma gave it all to me. I got into a lot of trouble one Halloween dressed as a SS Officer toting a real Luger pistol.
My brother was kitted out as an enlisted Nazi and was carrying an MP40. We lived in Skokie IL at the time and it was largely Jewish.
I have a theory that clothing shrink as it moves further back in the closet. (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. LOL)
I don’t like Handler, but must give her credit for honesty in revealing a very uncomfortable truth.

That is aproperly progressive attitude. Someone on the “other side” is to be castigated for everything you can think of whether it is relevant to anything or not. Conservatives, individualists and such don’t attack someone based on his social origin and ancestry or social origin. NAZIs did that, remember? surely that was left in the history books, even in public school. Communists did that in the USSR, too.
Wrong Chelsea, amigo. This isn’t Chelsea Manning
“...and I doubt her Jewish father knew of his father-in-laws dark past.”
He might not have known the full extent, but he HAD TO KNOW that the father-in-law fought on the German side in the war. There’s no way around that. It’s not like he didn’t have a German accent, wasn’t “aryan”, and could claim to have been in Brazil for the whole war.
So, she found out that her grandfather served in the Wehrmacht? It’s not like he was in Einsatzgruppe-A or something.
