First-person shooter is one of the most popular perspectives among gamers, but these simulations can be used for much more than entertainment specifically military training. And thanks to new the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer III, Marine Corps marksmen are about to take their sharpshooting skills to a whole new level.
Though the Corps has been using virtual reality to train Marines for two decades, the systems for marksmanship have become exponentially better.
With the ISMT III, Marines have access to multiple weapons: the M9 service pistol, M4 carbine, and wireless weapons, including the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle, M32A1 Multi-Shot Grenade Launcher and M72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon.
This latest iteration, modeled off the Firearms Training Simulator (FATS), also boasts three-dimensional projections and features enhanced training modes, giving Marines a better, more realistic training experience as they prepare for the complexities of modern warfare, the release said.

I wonder if this will really work. The noise and recoil will be absent.
Some things are just better done in the field. There is so much you can’t simulate in a VR environment.
Fire hoses and ghillie suits will still be involved.

A majority of the training for snipers is how to remain invisible without affecting your ability to fight. That won’t change much. It can’t be taught in a seminar.
They will still have to spend a lot of time on the range.
I don't know but this seems to work pretty well. Never Miss Rifle.
“The noise and recoil will be absent.”
Noise is there. Even without recoil, training to react to scenarios is a good thing.
You can weed out those that can’t respond.
Headline is misleading.
NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin credited one of his wins to sim racing.

A big part of being a sniper is finding hidden/camouflaged enemy. This can be put into video training.
What happened to the chain saw and the nail gun?
Like they took out the Nigerian Archbishop in Shooter?
It’ll be second-best training. But it’ll be a lot cheaper.
OTOH, the Scout-Sniper has to be good at observation and field-craft too. You only get a shot further on down the line.
You ever kill anything with a rifle? Noise and recoil are absent.
[[There is so much you cant simulate in a VR environment.]]
Exactly- for instance, how do you simulate exhaling while slowly and deliberately squeezing the trigger so as not to jerk the trigger? How do you simulate having a blackfly land in your eye right as you’re about to take the shot? How do you simulate sweat dripping into your eye, blurring your vision? (I guess that could be done digitally by blurring the scene a bit)- how do you simulate being stung by fireants as you’re lining up your shot? Heat Stroke? Body odor distraction? Dust causing urge to sneeze? mosquitos biting you? Hornets nests? Angry chupacabras menacing you? Thoughts of fight you had with spouse earlier that day? indigestion from chalupas at taco bell? Headache from the sun?
So many things can’t be simulated digitally-
...if they ever have to fight an Indoor Simulated war!
...if they ever have to fight an Indoor Simulated war!
...if they ever have to fight an Indoor Simulated war!
...if they ever have to fight an Indoor Simulated war!
I have killed a lot of time, does that count.
