Archaeologists have discovered an area in Thomas Jefferson's plantation home that was once the living quarters of Sally Hemings - a slave with whom he is believed to have had six children. Her room, which was built in 1809 and was 14 feet, 8 inches wide and 13 feet long, was next to Thomas Jefferson's room. However, the bedroom went unnoticed for decades and the area was even made into a men's bathroom in 1941.

I think the Brits enjoy slamming Jefferson with a false story.

This "theory" has long been disproven.

I’ve got some familiarity with controversial family legends. Mine, through my mother’s family, says that we descend from Opechancanough due to his raping Mary Sizemore during the Second Anglo-Powhatan War in Jamestown. I suppose it could only possibly be confirmed through male descendants, though, much like this. I don’t doubt that they descent from “a” Jefferson, but I strongly doubt that they descend from Thomas Jefferson.

I believe this theory has been discredited in favor of one of his nephews.

The nephew story is plausible, but doesn't disprove the possibility of Thomas Jefferson's paternity of Sally Hemings's children. It just shows that there is another possibility.

As I like to say, "The existence of Hypothesis B does not disprove Hypothesis A." Contemporaneous documentary evidence supports Hypothesis A, Thomas Jefferson's paternity. John Adams believed it.

It’s not a theory.

DNA doesn’t lie.

I think people pretend it was debunked, but there is so much evidence that he was the father of at least some of her children, it’s hard to deny.

Randolph Jefferson was a very infrequent visitor to Monticello. The detailed record of visitors to Monticello show that the times that Randolph visited his brother do not match up the times the Heming would have gotten pregnant. Those records also show that Thomas Jefferson was present at Monticello when Heming became pregnant.

Yep, those white slaves couldn’t help looking just like Jefferson, or carrying the Jefferson DNA.

He was a fairly old man at the time and a highly accomplished public figure. I can believe this far more of a randy younger male relative who had not yet learned self control than I could of him.

Well, Opechancanough’s name does roughly translate into ‘He whose Soul is White.’

According to the standard story, the liaison began when he was in France in the Revolutionary period. He was a widower no older than 40, and she was a young teenager.

“Fairly old man?” Donald Trump ...

And you’re all aware that Sally Hemmings was the half sister of Jefferson’s wife.

I am aware, yes, and that contemporaneous descriptions said she was light skinned and pretty, with long, straight dark hair.

That continues the controversial legend. Being the half brother of the historical Chief Powhatan, his soul was legendarily white because he was the product of rape himself, at the hands of a Spanish missionary. Opechancanough is also believed to have been Don Luis de Velasco, on a somewhat related note. Fascinating man who was basically written out of most history because of his slaughters at Jamestown, pretty reviled because of that but there are also those who recognized him as brilliant in many ways, multilingual, quite the politician, very advanced military strategist for that time. He did hate the colonists, wanted them to leave but it escalated.

‘As an African American descendant, I have mixed feelings - Thomas Jefferson was a slave holder.’

She should be glad or else she and her kids wouldn’t be here today.

Apparently, Sally had as nice a room as da white folk. Brick walls, brick fireplace, brick floors and a decent size. Still, libs will find something to get snippy about.

Oprah once had a show with the descendants and made da white folk in the audience stand and apologize.
