Is Serena Williams only as good as the male tennis player ranked 700th in the world? According to tennis veteran John McEnroe, quite possibly yes.
Thats what he said in an interview that aired on Sunday and his assessment sparked some debate online and a stern rebuke from Williams on Twitter where she said his statements are not factually based and that she has never played anyone ranked there.
So, what exactly did McEnroe say to get this kind of response from the top player in womens tennis?
In an interview that aired on Sunday, NPRs Lulu Garcia-Navarro asked McEnroe about his new book, But Seriously, and questioned the way he qualified hsi praise for Williams as the best female player in the world.

A funny (but accurate!) bit by a marriage counselor on the difference between men’s brains and women’s brains. Makes a lot of sense.
Remember that young woman that they said could play on the PGA tour a few years ago/ She failed miserably.
Agree completely. Have been saying that for years.
Not a fan of the Williams’ sisters, but her Twitter response was at least respectful.
The black widow female spider is much larger than the male.
Then there are the Amazon women :)
If biology was smart, females should have been larger, because they carry on the task of growing the fetus from an invisibly small object to a fully grown baby. That is a huge demand and task for the body.
Skill & brute muscular strength are 2 different animals.
Take the testosterone out of Serena, and she would look much more feminine.
She is the tallest midget in the room.
Uh, I think you are a little confused. We are talking about McEnroe playing an animal from the Zoo.
If you’ve been following this story, it’s worth reading the original interview in which McEnroe made his comment aobut Serena — and how he was goaded into it by a douchebag “journalist” at NPR:
From the interview:
Garcia-Navarro: We’re talking about male players but there is of course wonderful female players. Let’s talk about Serena Williams. You say she is the best female player in the world in the book.
McEnroe: Best female player ever no question.
Garcia-Navarro: Some wouldn’t qualify it, some would say she’s the best player in the world. Why qualify it?
McEnroe: Oh! Uh, she’s not, you mean, the best player in the world, period?
Garcia-Navarro: Yeah, the best tennis player in the world. You know, why say female player?
McEnroe: Well because if she was in, if she played the men’s circuit she’d be like 700 in the world.
Garcia-Navarro: You think so?
McEnroe: Yeah. That doesn’t mean I don’t think Serena is an incredible player. I do, but the reality of what would happen would be I think something that perhaps it’d be a little higher, perhaps it’d be a little lower. And on a given day, Serena could beat some players. I believe because she’s so incredibly strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke ‘cause she’s been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, The U.S. Open, etc. But if she had to just play the circuit the men’s circuit that would be an entirely different story.

Serena Williams is pregnant, you do understand that men cant get pregnant, dont you.<<
I don’t believe it. As easy to fake as pretending to be women. Dad probably hatched this plan since a LOT of people think as I do.
But soon it won’t matter.
Top 200 maybe.
Never did that again.
She acknowledges in this video from the David Letterman show at around 4:45 that men's and women's tennis are almost 2 different sports due to the physiological differences between men and women and that she would lose handily to Andy Murray.

She essentially said the same thing that McEnroe said, but she did so about 4 years ago. Another case of selective outrage.
LeBron with breasts.
Wow. I didn’t know that. I thought she might have a chance to beat a guy in the top 100. But I know little about tennis.
Thanks.
true
I've been golfing for about 50 years. I can't ever recall females teeing it up from the back tees at lengthy golf courses. It has been very rare even to see women tee up from the standard men's tee box unless they are on a golf team or playing professional.
She was the media’s Darling. I think she was an amateur wanting to go pro. Someone talked her into trying out for the men tournament..
Might be Michelle Wie you are thinking of.
