Box office flatlines as everyone ignores the multiplex this Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend would seem like the best time for a big summer blockbuster to hit the theaters, but in recent years audiences have been focusing more on their tans and grillmaster skills over the holiday than going to a movie theater.

Past Memorial Day holiday weekend openings that were instant fails at the box office include: "Tomorrowland" ($33 million opening weekend), "Alice Through the Looking Glass" ($26.8 million), and "X-Men: Apocalypse" ($65.7 million). Now you can add two new releases from this year to that list.

There’s a man of faith, but they don’t say what faith, and he was a lame character.

There really aren’t any likeable characters. My husband, daughter, and I talked about how stupid they were and didn’t follow any safety precautions.

Young people go out to get out of the house and be entertained.

Times have changed. We're seniors and don't need to go to movies. Everything we want is at home, decent house and TV entertainment system. Can pause, rewatch other parts of the movie, no interference from others like at a theater, have all the snacks we need.

When younger, young people got out of the house to be on dates without parents hovering around them. Then they got jobs, moved to their own place, and didn't need to get out to be entertained. But now, with "young" people in their thirties still living with their parents, I guess they're the ones still going out to the movies.

The Godfather should NEVER be remade. Why mess with perfection?

The Godfather had no homos, so homowood homofornia and its millenial audiences need to politically correct this glaring mistake.

Yes, I just used "politically correct" as a verb.

Sure, blame it on the holiday weekend. Or Trump. Or global warming.

Nope!

It's Russia, in collusion with Trump!

The mindless morons of hollyweird decided to remake the Hitchcock classic, "Psycho," with Vince Vaughn as Anthony Perkins, and Anne Heche as Vera Miles. They knew from the start that they couldn't out-write or out-shoot the original, so they used the same screenplay and cinematography. Of course, Alfred Hitchcock purposely shot the movie (against the wishes of the studio) in B&W, while the "new and improved" 1998 version was shot in color.

Oh lol...King Kong? I didn't even realize it had come out. We have a favorite theatre which is the only one we go to. Reserved seats that recline. Two together so I can hold my wife's hand like at home. Otherwise we do not go to movies. Yes, my wife gives good hand. 😜

There was a time when I paid to see a new film almost every week, but somewhere along the line I lost the ability to suspend disbelief for most films.

Whenever I watch a film, I now see a highly paid actor, whose leftist political beliefs are usually well publicized, sporting strategically coiffed hair, obvious makeup, and carefully selected clothing. I don't see the character portrayed.

I couldn't care less how a sneering leftist actor fleshes out a sneering leftist screenwriter's fantasies.

To hell with them and their industry.

Lol! Salt Lake City empties out on Memorial Day (and Labor Day). Masses and masses of RVs heading mainly for Lake Powell. A stupid time to hold a convention or open a supposed summer blockbustet.

Top gun is next. Why mess with a movie that’s perfect. Makes no sense.

Speaking of Top Gun, Tom Cruise is in a remake/reboot of "The Mummy."

Another example of going after a terrific movie (come on, admit it... The Mummy with Brendon Frasier is a guilty pleasure.)

My issue with movies lately--CGI. I'd be partial to sci-fi flicks, or action adventure. But every one seems to have CGI with 10000 robots, or aliens or something acting like bugs. While impressive, it is just a giant turnoff to me.

I think they use it to make up for plot weakness. While not my favorite movie by any means, but I think Aliens, circa 1986 or so is great. They use real models to shoot the scenes, not CGI crap. And 30 years later, it still holds up pretty well, and doesn't look overly cheesy.

Ridley Scott directed Alien, he returned to the helm to direct the prequal Prometheus, and Alian Covenant.

There is a very good reason why the zenomorphs in Alien, are not the same. Chronologically Alien takes place 27 years AFTER the event's depicted in Prometheus and 17 years AFTER Alien Covenant.

These two prequels to Alien COMBINED set the stage for Alien. And Alien Covenant does indeed answer THE question which you and so many asked and wondered about for so many years: Where did they come from and why. Ridley Scott does a masterful, yet subtle job of moving forward the narrative he so aptly began with Alien and "tying up (most of the) 'loose ends'".

Alien Covenant is worth seeing on the big screen. But read the two reviews I cited AFTER you watch Alien Covenant and then rewatch Prometheus... Scott puts all of the main story arc pieces of the puzzle together and it's frighteningly well done.

Prometheus and Alien Covenant are thinking man's science fiction that deal with profound themes and issues and Ridley Scott is a master story teller.

ha. when I see stuff like your photo of Wonder woman taking out the nazis with her whip, I am reminded of the Sword fights in Raiders of the lost ark...

Reportedly, Harrison Ford was a bit ill, and when the director started to tell him how to act the fight scene, Ford said: Why don't we just shoot the F......

Memphis and out skirts had big T storm, knocked out power to 180,000 people and businesses yesterday. Which means movies and fast food were CLOSED!

Not so good for home owners though. Step Daughter with out power over 16 hrs, couldn’t even get her garage door open, it had not been manually opened in 10 yrs so needed some WD 40 which she didn’t have. Fix you computer that she can do, or install a Server...boil water NO WAY! Electric stove. No back up Generator. Which she should have as a business person fixing computers for a living. Then she have to be taught how to use it. Doesn’t even know how to mow her own lawn. If it can’t be zapped she’d not have food. Eats at Fast Food joints mostly, No way to get the car out of garage. LOL
