Three married U.S. Marine officers have found themselves under investigation for a night in February that went off the rails in Bogotá, involving allegations they went drinking with some local women, were slipped illicit drugs, robbed of U.S. property and landed in a local hospital emergency room.

Their careers and marriages are in shambles. That’s a high price to pay for some strange xxxxx...

I never cease to be amazed at the risks a man will take (possibly ruin his marriage and career) just so he can feel a sensation on the outside of his penis. To me, it doesn't seem that the "reward" is worth the risk.

“The three officers walked four women through the hotel lobby at about 4:30 a.m.,” “The colonel and the two majors wound up in the hospital on Feb. 4, rather than catching a flight home with the others.” How did they manage both of those? And if they did walk the women through the lobby, they didn’t happen to notice the women carrying their laptops or that their belongings were missing? Marines. Who can ever understand them!

If I understand this correctly, the three officers were with the women, and at some point before they got back to the hotel, two of the officers were drugged. Nonetheless they were able to walk to their rooms with the women. After they got to their rooms is when they blacked out, and the items were stolen. Then, the two officers who were drugged were hospitalized.

I know that area of Bogota.....the Marines knew better. N.Bogota is great...bars restaurants and great for hanging out. The Galaria area is high end malls. But on the edge it gets shady. Their careers are ruined.

> Their careers are ruined.

You can’t run a military where men are ruined because they picked a girl at a bar. You’ll end up with men too timid to fight.

If these Marines are court-martialed I'll bet learning what was on the iPads and cell phones will be interesting.Maybe even classified!

They had better not have Classified documents on those machines. If those computers had anything above FOUO they were supposed to be secured in an approved area or container.

I had to travel CONUS and OCONUS, sometimes with classified info. The info (laptops and papers) never left my possession and I had to make sure that when I arrived at my destination the first thing I had to do was take that stuff to my pre-arranged storage location and make sure it was secure.

I question the judgement of those who get themselves into these situations! I recall Ft. Bragg during the Vietnam war that all of us in SF (both officers and NCO’s) knew damn well that some wives were using both the main NCO club and especially the 82nd officers club to meet single men while their husband was in Vietnam. One of the bartenders at the club was married to a legendary SF SGM, and; I will always be grateful to her from giving me the heads up on married women.

That’s not what happened.

It’s that they were compromised by some people at a bar.

Have you ever heard of the term, “spy?” These are people who try to get information through any and every means. Countries have been dealing with them and with the consequences of their own people being compromised for thousands of years.

So, continue to believe that it’s healthy for married people to compromise themselves with sensitive knowledge.

You are just the sort of person our enemies most adore.

I know plenty of Colombians, several are insane as you know. The anxiety and anger levels hover pretty high among all the ones I know.

My wife is Cuban and we have a friend who is Cuban married to a Colombian. Ay Caramaba! I can only imagine the hot/cold relationship those two have.

I was at Bragg for summer ROTC training in 1975 when Hay Street war roaring. First advice we got from our cadre was not to go there but it was not off limits. So........not only did we go there but we saw them there too. We did not train on weekends and had our cars so it sure beat sitting on those old world war 2 wooden barracks with no air in June/July. Rick’s Lounge was the favorite stop for us. What a “colorful” place Hay Street was.

They will be afforded the Commander’s Right to Non-Judicial Punishment (NJP) under the catch-all Violation of UCMJ Article 134... at their General Officer’s level for a start. They can request a Trial by Court-Martial which could lead to a Special Court-Martial at least or General Court-Martial at the most. That would NOT be smart. Or the Convening Authority can automatically kick it to a Trial by Court-Martial.

Take the NJP gentlemen, the government’s got the upper hand on this case; plead guilty and request mercy of the CA. Punishment awarded could be: Heavy fines, I mean, “HEAVY” ... $ thousands. Reduction in Lineal Rankings by several hundred numbers in the USMC Officers “Blue Book,” and a Punitive Letter of Reprimand (PLOR) issued to each and filed in their Officer’s Qualification Record at Hq USMC. No promotion, end of career.

Many years ago, I witnessed two married LtCols (not to each other!) lose their careers for “screwing around.” They took General Officer’s NJP. Both fined about $5K, reduced in Lineal Rankings by serveral hundred numbers, PLOR, and put “In Hack” (Remain In Quarters) until their Permanant Change of Station Orders could be completed to send them and their families to separate Duty Stations.

I was a friend of the female LtCol’s husband; a Major and a great guy. He took it all very badly as the affair and legalities destroyed his family. His wife WAS a “Fast Tracker” and was likely to earn a Star.... she screwed that up.

Take heed ALL: Beware of the “Honey Traps.”

another officer drew cash advances off his U.S. government travel card

Even though it is he, personally, who is responsible for these charges and not the government, this will be the detail that ruins him.

These Clowns will get EXACTLY what they deserve! They violated Standing Orders and Regulations while also violating their honor!

I would expect a Special Court Martial is coming their way!

You have that right! I have made numerous trips to Bolivia and stay in the safe confines of my hotel when I am in Santa Cruz. Foreign land and laws are not simply not worth it.

I had to travel CONUS and OCONUS, sometimes with classified info.

Never having advanced higher than SP5 (many decades ago) and never having had access to classified info I'm unfamiliar with how such info is handled.

My guess is that you are,or once were, somehow connected to the missile silos in the Dakotas and elsewhere...perhaps even as an officer. The reason I speculated as to the contents of the electronic devices was because we're talking field grade Marine officers...men who probably handle classified info as a matter of routine. And one might suspect that given their rank they might be,perhaps,"unofficially" exempted from at least some of the regulations regarding the handling of such info.

God knows that the Former Twelfth Lady was! ;-)

Never having run afoul of the UCMJ during my stellar (cough...cough) Army career I know little about this kind of stuff but won't these men, after whatever punishment they receive, pretty much be expected to resign their commission...assuming the're not separated as part of a court-martial sentence?

Obama’s PC “tolerant” military was far different that President Trump’s military under General Mattis.

All those in President Trump and Mad Dog Mattis’ military would be wise to remember that

Did the first Columbian woman have an alleged ‘daughter’? If so, I may remember you from that era. I haven’t thought of you, or that, for years.

It’s one thing for privates and non-coms to blow off steam.

Field grade officers should be held to much higher standards.
