WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD MAY 5, 2017
freerepublic | May 5, 2017 | greeenyes

Posted on 05/05/2017 7:39:19 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Will do. Looking forward to your posts! My grand parent’s had a small dairy herd, that they milked by hand, chickens, and raised hogs. Of course they had gardens too.

No indoor plumbing, until they were very old, and then it was just cold water to the kitchen sink. Wood stove heat.

I spent most of my first 5 years down on their farm, and every summer till high school. So I know what you mean about a way of life.

Hubby and I are trying to get back to that, but only have an acre here where we live. We do have 20 acres north of town, but most likely will not be moving there now.

We had a few clear but windy days here on the far north coast of Calif so we got some spading done and I planted five 12’ rows of potatoes plus I have one more row of German Butter Ball to plant but we had a typical nor cal drizzle today that amounted to about a 1/4 of a inch. Im very disappointed on the progress of the strawberries I planted 3 months ago and will give them a boost of fertilizer soon. I’ll see what I have in photos to share...

First chickies!!!

I have them in a brooding box in my room for now. I never realized how relaxing it would be to wake up to the sound of baby chicks in the morning :)

(Better pictures soon.)

I up loaded 9 or 10 photos to Flikr and I’ll post a few quick photos tonight and I’ll finish tomorrow. First up is the new potato bed, some starts in the greenhouse and the spinach and radishes coming up…

I hit the wrong key, I am not at 6,500 ft elevation, I am at 8,500 ft elevation. I have put lots of sawdust from cutting up firewood into the garden this year. I also add trench composed kitchen scraps and leaves/pine needles. The normal soil here is boulders and some granite sand. I have built up terraces of compost that I continue to add to all year.

Hope you are doing well. Is that commercial vermiculite in your soil? I do not currently use any and wonder if it is worth while?

It is part of the mix in the Black Gold potting soil we use in Lady Benders 50 planters on the deck that we recycle every year. We use around 55 I.5 cf bags per year. Are you still following Nascar?

Miracle-Gro is sending me a coupon since 1/2 my Cherry Tomato plants died in pre-planting. 1 of the 3 Cucumber plants is failing.

My Ferry-Morse Dixie Squash had 3 of 7 seeds shoot up strong. Now one is dying. :(

So I’m looking at 2 of 7 there. Moved the Bush Early Girl and several of the pepper plants outside for fresh air and Sun. We’re looking at 80 soon. Gotta do some transplanting because got a lot of clay in so-called topsoil. Have a better bag to fix things. Unopened.

I grow veggies in raised beds, and use cinderblocks for the borders, because then I can fill the cinderblocks with dirt and use them to grow smaller plants. So far none of the mint has escaped the cinderblocks, though the peppermint is making a valiant effort.

Currently I have spearmint, peppermint, orange mint, pineapple mint, strawberry mint, apple mint, pear mint, and one that I can’t quite place but is definitely mintish. It is possible that I have a small problem.

It is difficult to post photos to this site but I understand why. At least Flikr formats the HTML for me and I have to select the size of the photo...

I am still following NASCAR. If I pick a driver it is a sure thing they will get wrecked!

we finally opened our windows just 3 days ago because we had a nice warm day....since then, cool weather and rain...

I have some corn plants on the deck and many seeds planted in cups with little to show....

I've got onions and taters planted and some loose leaf lettuce....

that's about it....

The secret to chives is plug of dense clay. Plant them in the clay. They dont spread that way. Have had a free growing plug in my garden for 20 years. Hasnt spread but a few inches each way.

The sun is shining in Central Missouri and I’m off to the sprint car races in Wheatland, MO tonight.

I’ve mostly been cutting grass this week. Got all of the lawn and up around the market garden done, and most of the horse paddock areas are finished. Should take less than an hour tomorrow to finish that up.

It ought to be dry enough tomorrow to do some work in the kitchen garden. Think I’ll plant some snap beans. Market garden is still a muddy mess.

I hear a lot of people start their seedlings early. I’m never that organized! nor do I have a spot for them all. But maybe next year I’ll figure it out :-)

hope your little seedlings start sprouting.

It has turned cold here too. We’ve gone from 80° temperatures to 50s. It must be global cooling

I wish I had mint. My lemon balm has taken over all the mint, like an aggressive bully. I’d like to get rid of it but it’s like a horrible weed.
