Should we bring back the draft?
In the wake of another Memorial Day, when most Americans recognized their fallen veterans by staying home from the office, its worth taking a moment to consider a perennial question: Should the military draft return? Yes, argued Joseph Epstein in The Atlantic earlier this year. Epstein, a short story writer and former draftee who served in the Army from 1958 to 1960, opposes an all-volunteer force for several reasons: Its unfair for a tiny percentage of Americansless than one percentto shoulder the burden of fighting wars; the American public isnt knowledgeable enough on foreign policy; the draft could rehabilitate young criminal offenders; and, most of all, a draft would contribute to the melting pot that makes America great.
This is NOT the old military and the rules have changed, to the point where, until President trump changes things, the military is just a "SOCIAL JUSTICE"/ACCEPT PERVERSION/WOMEN ARE THE SAME AS MEN indoctrination bastion, with far too many lefty hold overs in change, thanks to Obama.
If there was a call to enlist, a new "Uncle Sam Want's You!" campaign there would be no need for a draft.
Naah. I say hell yes. Blue states only. Affirmative action to LBGTQ I DONT HAVE A F’NCLUE applicants. Send them with pussy hats and masks. Make them wear body cams.
I would pay money to watch that show.
The snowflakes will muster out in a week...tops.
The gangbangers won't follow orders and get into trouble. You want the Muslims and the Ms-13edrs in our military?
You want the dope addicts drafted too? *snicker*
How about the trannies?
THE MILITARY IS NOT A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT; AT LEAST IT SHOULDN'T BE ONE, BUT RIGHT NOW, THAT'S WHAT IT IS!
See 23 hun.
Excellent question. Excellent responses here.
No. Draft brings about a high percentage of lazy soldiers. Plus, the present voluntary military is tops in the world and has a waiting list.
No. It wreaked destruction on this country to have the draft for Vietnam.
I saw it first hand -— up close and personal.
A rational draft hat would preclude all the fears of being drafted would be a universal MALE draft to be automatic at age 18 or 17 if a high school graduate for 6 months of basic and infantry training with no assignment to actual duty. At the end of the 6 months the trainees would not be allowed to enlist in the regular military for a further 6 months. With that system the draft for actual service would not be necessary. The main resistance to the draft is young men who fear being shot at or who fear putting their college on hold and others getting an earlier start at careers. The universal training ends the fear-of-the-unknown factor. It is something all have experienced and it is not scary any more. If the nation is under attack there will be no lack of volunteers. And, we will have a much more mature, patriotic, responsible population of young men. No, women should not be drafted and should not be trained in battlefield arts unless there is a real prospect of massive invasion.
There are some good kids/CONSERVATIVES in Blue States and so, your idea is patently ridiculous, punitive to those who don't deserve your smarmy, unhelpful suggestion. Besides which, there ARE the same kinds of garbage in Red States.
The Military is not and should NOT be a punishment sentence. Neither, can it, as it is now,reclaim/rehabilitate today's subhuman garbage.

Hell No.
I agree. The struggle to accept and acclimate to some very clear standards will do the average young person a world of good. Too much of present day society is built around the presumed needs and expectations of the weakest or least qualified among us. Aim higher, stop being so comfortable with resentful envy of others achievements.
Being in the Armed Forces may offer a last chance for some young folks to learn about making a living in the coming age of robotics. They could study coding, or engineering if the aptitude is there. They could fill a billet in medical care, or radiology. All these occupations will continue to be in great demand. This provides an opportunity to learn a practical skill set before you’re fully responsible for bills.
It also gives you the chance to move out of the family home, if that is what’s wanted. I was very close to my family, still am, but I was ready to leave home as soon as I graduated High School.
Not everybody will receive a scholarship as I did, so they would benefit from a few years of service.
“If the nation is under attack there will be no lack of volunteers”.
I see your points but adamantly disagree with this one. Only about half would volunteer to help the country.
Today's military is a far cry from what it once was and so is boot camp!
I have a little first hand knowledge about that. In the period where they were shifting to all volunteer, there were a lot of judges that were telling 'youthful offenders' "Enlist or go to jail." thinking that a drill sergeant would 'straighten them out. But in reality, where 80% of regular draftees were useless or worse, maybe one out of ten 'youthful offenders' actually 'straightened themselves' out.
We pretty much learned to hate those judges for pushing off their undesirables on us.
It would be fun to watch.
Nope
I saw it first hand, too.
Why burden the military with it?
Dont they gave enough to do without having to reform a bunch of special snowflakes?
I have to agree, they would get overwhelmed with duds.
agree
