Should we bring back the draft?
In the wake of another Memorial Day, when most Americans recognized their fallen veterans by staying home from the office, its worth taking a moment to consider a perennial question: Should the military draft return? Yes, argued Joseph Epstein in The Atlantic earlier this year. Epstein, a short story writer and former draftee who served in the Army from 1958 to 1960, opposes an all-volunteer force for several reasons: Its unfair for a tiny percentage of Americansless than one percentto shoulder the burden of fighting wars; the American public isnt knowledgeable enough on foreign policy; the draft could rehabilitate young criminal offenders; and, most of all, a draft would contribute to the melting pot that makes America great.
No
No
voluntary military makes it the world’s best
if you think youth need military training, set up a ‘program’ for them. those youth won’t make our military better.
Why burden the military with it?
Don’t they gave enough to do without having to reform a bunch of special snowflakes?
Hell no
No More Government telling us what to do.
No way
F No
Instead, form an American Foreign Legion like France and other countries have done. I once wrote an article on that for an e-zine but they have since then disappeared.
NO!
It was bad enough back in my day when people in general (other than the ‘hippies’) were fairly patriotic.
I served at the end of the draft era and the beginning of the all volunteer era.
In my experience, two out of ten draftees made fairly good soldiers. The rest were detrimental to esprit de corps and unit competence. Much more trouble than they were worth.
NO!
our debt-fed Fed.gov is far too big. Any government-sponsored marshaling of American youth will be greatly used and abused by nanny-staters and leftists for their own propaganda and brain-washing. They’ll turn everyone into “community-organizers.”
they will do to the draft, what they have done to public schooling - only much worse.
Yes.
I can't wait.
Nope, just have every able bodied 18 Year Old attend an abbreviated National Guard Boot Camp for a Month.
On their way Home, tell them they are on Call for the next four Years just in case their Nation needs them.
No College Deferrals, no Family Obligations, nothing but a Month Long paid Vacation courtesy of Uncle Sam.
Thanks Lee,
I think it help rehabilitate especially those snowflakes, protesters, druggies and clean up major problem crime cities like Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles etc.
No. It wreaked destruction on this country to have the draft for Vietnam. Much better than those who choose to fight, do so.
I have forgotten who said that “All armies are either mercenaries or slaves and history shows that mercenaries make better soldiers”
The only time a draft makes sense to me is in a situation like WW2 where the problem is too many men are volunteering and height, weight and health requirements are used to weed out those physically unfit for service.
Two months would be better and would get more of the core training done. You could cut NBC, heavy weapons, commo, and some of the FTX. I would still keep the PT, drilling, marching, basic first aid, range time and then stick them in the woods for a week then road march them home.
Finding the drill instructors and space would be very hard, plus you would have to pay them. We could not do all of the male 18 year olds to start with.
I would run every 22 year old thru 3-4 month boot camp.
And from that, try to recruit the top 2-3 percent ( approx 60K) for five+ years for special forces, urban warfare... other combat shortages. And give them money for college or trade school or start a business after.
That way you get a look at everyone, and see what they are capable of, in case there is a massive war in the future where a volunteer force can’t do it. You have an inventory of potential draftees.
at the end you have the snowflakes up to the level of an average kid in the 1950’s - knows the rules of gun safety, what to do in the bush, do what they are told, be polite etc.
You want to push people but it’s not the foreign legion boot camp of near-death.
Except for the gang bangers, antifada and others who do not want to behave and do what they are told. For them, boot camp like the SS without the racism.
Yes. It’s one way to undo the years of brainwashing millennials suffered at the hands of liberal teachers. Of course, it won’t work on everyone. But the draft can turn out some fine soldiers if given the chance. And they’ll never turn if denied the opportunity and experience of serving their country. Just my opinion.
