In the folks 1st home after the war in 1945 he painted a mural size of a Mauldin page on the cellar wall, 6 feet high at the bottom of the stairs. It read, Don’t startle him Joe, its almost full”.

I remember that one. As kids we flipped those pages for years and tears.

Thats the one.At class reunions neighborhood kids still bring that up.
Our house was the one all the other kids hung out at.

My favorite Up Front cartoon is Willie and Joe in a foxhole with a Panzer parked above them. Joe is on the field telephone: “Able Fox Five to Able Fox. I got a target but ya gotta be patient”.

I don’t know why the control surfaces were fabric. Does anyone know why? Most WWII planes were like that for some reason.

I have no idea why they were fabric - I’m sure vets will reply with the correct answers. My guesses would be to conserve on the metal and maybe less weight? They might have been easier and quicker to repair if damaged?

I googled it. Something about “flutter” and less control pressure for the pilot. whatever.

As weird as it sounds, I went through darn near the same thing with a bunker-mate that decided to shoot the rats inside our bunker. Damn things would rustle around all night.

He decides to ambush them, me with a flashlight, he with a M-16. C-rats chocolate laid out on the tinfoil wrapper. Sound of the rustle, lights on and the crazy bastard lights them up.

And my wife still wonders how my hearing got so bad? Of course, I was the one that lost it with them rattling about in our C-rats cans outside the bunker and went out and went to war with a .45. Took quite a few point blank shots to nail one.
