When they were walking alone and chatting, they were responsive to each other's speech and seemed to be having a good time.
I don't think Xi Jinping speaks English and I don't think President Trump speaks Mandarin...so how did they understand each other?
Were they wearing mics and earphones?
I raff and raff!
I am a native Iowan. I speak English. Who the hell are you? Some Egyptian monolith? Hablo Espanol?
Oh my, aren’t those men their respective aides carrying their nuclear footballs?
:)
Maybe.
As I mentioned once before, I’m pretty well traveled (been to 39 countries) and I can you from my experiences that MANY MANY people around the world speak English. I was in Vietnam a month ago and was surprised to be able to get by in English. Most Europeans can speak at least some English, except the Italians and possibly French. Most People in central and South America Don’t speak English but since I speak Spanish it doesn’t matter. Most Educated people speak English in Asia except in Japan. They’re kinda Xenophobic there. And of course almost everyone speaks English in the former British colonies around the globe. And many educated people in the Middle East also speak English.
They used Babel fish
While officially he only speaks English...that is just a pretense to cover his real origins; for back in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory he and his shorter cousins had all eaten a special magical candy which allows them to converse (and sing cute songs with moral lessons) in any language. He alone later experimented with another magical candy that makes Oompa Loompas taller and more business savvy. Sadly, too business savvy for Mr. Wonka's liking...
They learn it in school.
And with 1.5 billion people, it would be easy enough to have that distinction.
If you want to get anywhere in this world professionally, you need English.
In the medical profession, I hear a lot of complaints that patients cannot understand their foreign trained MDs, as their accents are very thick.
Sure there are plenty of Italian and French businesses out there, but you are really limited if you want go international.
If I were to learn a useful for business language, I'd study Mandarin.
Or maybe President Trump stayed at a Holiday Inn recently.

Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad was one of the US counterparts to Xi during that Iowa trip and apparantly they became friendly and have maintained that through the years. Xi is not running China and Branstad was just nominated by Trump to be Ambassador to China but he has yet to be confirmed.
>>>Sorry, not Oklahoma. Iowa<<<
If Yu build it, Yi will come.

The clip of the two walking and chatting might have been pure PR fluff. Image is everything, after all.
Xi is like Merkel. Speaks English. Chooses not to. He may not be fluent and you don’t want to make an innocent language mistake speaking to a world leader, etc.
