When they were walking alone and chatting, they were responsive to each other's speech and seemed to be having a good time.
I don't think Xi Jinping speaks English and I don't think President Trump speaks Mandarin...so how did they understand each other?
Were they wearing mics and earphones?
A far fetched conclusion:
DJT is known to be a quick study. Looking at his history, who’s to say he didn’t learn Chinese/Mandarin overnight as a prelude to the meeting. Even though he doesn’t sleep much, there are always the TAPES to assist in learning a foreign language. Also consider earphones worn - and a hair dresser who is better able to hide them as opposed to that which ‘dressed’ BO’Bs bob.

Xi speaks English. As another poster said, many leaders speak English fluently but many also don’t like being caught speaking English. Their level of fluency differs but it is generally very good. Usually they wish to use translators in diplomatic settings to ensure that nothing was ‘lost in translation’ since it’s high stakes. It’s amusing since when Trump is speaking in English, Xi understands and then he gets to hear in Chinese as well as a double check. It also gives him more time to think on his response.
Putin can also speak English. Most European leaders speak English. It’s the international language of business and it’s the language of the only superpower. Also, it’s common outside the US to learn a second and often third language to a fluent level, unlike in the US where most schools pretend to teach for a few years and the students learn very little.

I thought Xi lived in Oklahoma as a young guy as a part of some Chinese government delegation at one point. Thatt tidbit came up when they were discusing one of Trump’s nominees, who apparantly was friends with Xi at that time and still is. Maybe the ambassador to China? Anyway Xi probably does speak English it that’s true.

This prepares them for their future in the USSA where as workers they will pretend to work and the state will pretend to pay.

Trump only speaks English. Luckily, Xi can speak English too. Trump’s kids, on the other hand, are fluent in a few of different languages between them. Also, Melania speaks five different languages. Very impressive!
