Microsoft tops Apple in tablet satisfaction (including design)

Commentary: A new J.D. Power study finds Surface buyers are happier than their iPad counterparts. They're younger and prefer Microsoft's design.

Have you noticed a certain giddiness in some of your friends lately?

I'm thinking about the ones who use a Microsoft Surface.

I only ask because J.D Power has just emitted its US Tablet Satisfaction Study and it declared that Surface owners experience deeper sensations of satisfaction than iPad buyers.

Apple fanpersons might turn pale when they learn the main reasons for this greater Surface joy are, according to the Power people, "its top rankings in the features and styling & design factors."

The Surface Book looks like an interesting product. I might try one if I could ever run Linux on it... :)

Well, Mr. Jeeves, you can, and it won't spy on you if you do. . .

That Costco deal is only available to Costco members, but it is not the Manufacturers’ suggested Retail price as offered on Microsoft’s Store Website. . . where it does NOT include the “bundle.” Special offerings not available to everyone do not count.

Duh. Anyone can join Costco and save money.

Our coffee purchases alone pay for the card.

Plus they give free extended warranties!

Our tv went out at 23 months and they gave us a fUlla refund.

A ‘larger sceen’ is a huge negative for a hand held, portable device !!!

I will forward your comment to Apple that their 12.9 inch screen is a failure ...

Pretty sure Apple already knows that people prefer smaller screens based on their sales volume.

that while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro maintained strong sales momentum for two quarters, the the 9.7-inch model “lost its luster after just one quarter since its release”

Sales 1Q17:

78.29 million iPhones
13.08 million iPads
_5.37 million iMacs

When I made my last buying decision, I opted for a new iPhone - an iPhone_plus - instead of a new tablet.

Basically I looked at it as an iPad mini_mini.

So while I did not particularly want a larger phone, I got it as a new small screen iPad.

When my two sisters wanted an iPad, both opted for the smaller iPad mini size. It was much more pursable.

There is also something to be said for not carrying around a very expensive portable device that is easy to leave somewhere.

It is one thing to forget your $500 device.

It is another level of tragedy to forget your $2,000 device.

Ditto.

“Mini takes lead in US iPad sales as iPad Pro jumps in at 12 percent, survey data says By Roger Fingas

Thursday, January 21, 2016, 10:57 am PT (01:57 pm ET)

The split of U.S. iPad sales is now weighted in favor of the iPad mini, although the iPad Pro captured a “meaningful” 12 percent share during the December quarter, according to a survey compiled by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

While the iPad Air 2 remained the best-selling individual iPad model during the period, both Air generations comprised just 40 percent of units sold overall, CIRP said. The Mini segment made a major leap forward year-over-year from 32 to 47 percent.”

That is why I have an android tablet instead of a $500 iPad.

Also note that JD Powers is far from an “unbiased 3rd Party” - their automobile ratings that gut much touted by GM of late (for so-called “initial quality”) have been shown to be rather faulty and intentionally hinged towards particular makes.

That being said, it would appear that the market for “tablets” is indeed shifting to a more micro-notebook form-factor, so the fact that folks who buy the MS Surface would be happy with it is not such a surprise.

In my experience, my iPad has taken on about ½ of my work done previously on my MacBook Pro. If it ran a full OS, I would likely be able to essentially stop carrying my MBP at all. BUT - I’m not sure I want a tablet to fully supplant a “real” computer, if the files can be interchanged (I use Pages, Numbers, and Keynote a lot), then I’m cool with the current niche my iPad fills.

But I won’t lie - there are times that the Surface Pro seems like an attractive option (if only it ran MacOS!).

I”ve had a few struggles with Safari, but it seems to be back to functional for me. What makes you hate it so much (and I’m not trying to defend it - just trying to understand).

Safari used to present the bookmarks and disappear after a selection was made. Now, I have to manually close the bookmarks every time. The favorites bar disappears requiring me to make it visable again. Lastly, I can't set a home page.

Can't set a homepage?

But I have run in to the bookmarks issue - though not enough to frustrate me any more than other browsers.

And I've never had an issue with the favorites bar - odd. I wonder if there is a key combination you are hitting that makes it disappear?
