Gillette, which dominates the global razor business, has long followed a simple and lucrative strategy: Add new features and raise prices.
But the 115-year-old brand is changing tactics this month by slashing prices and putting a new focus on its cheaper products. The Procter & Gamble Co. unit hopes to stop

I buy 4-blade disposables (Schick or store brand, no matter) at the grocery at 4 for $5. The pack of 4 is good for 3 months or more, and equally as comfortable and nick-free as Gillette.
You're as cheap as I am. I use the Trac II and found blades on Amazon at $6.69 for 50. I note they're now up to about $9 and 100 blades will run you $14 or so.
It's not the original Gillette blade but a name brand:
Personna - Twin Pivot Plus (50 Blades/Order)
I switched to Harry’s a couple years ago. Less than half the price of Gillette and everything is mailed to my house. Blade quality is the exact same.
I use the cheap disposable BIC razors, about $2.00 a bag for 10 I guess. They do a fine job and I buy a new bag about every two months. Doesn’t get any cheaper than that.
I usually shave every other day, which helps them last a month, i.e. 15 shaves per ‘blade’.
LOL ...... thought I was the only crazy white boy to ever go there !
That is exactly like what Daddy used except his mug and the brush handle were white.
To shave, I use bacon grease and my hunting knife.

The best blades are Feather (Japan) and Perma-Sharp (Russia). Feathers are coinsidered THE sharpest blade available. Perma-Sharp almost as sharp but a tad smoother.
My razor is the amazing Edwin-Jagger "Chatsworth Ivory 3-pc" with flawless chrome plating.
When I started shaving the only question was single-edge vs. double edge.
BIC sucks, as any other generic/store brand, disposable-wise.
With all the new razors you see on TV, it’s no wonder.
#20 I use the Fusion blades. They last 1 month before I replace them. I clean them good and dry the blade. So my cost is about $3 a month.
Gillette Fusion 12 blades at $34

You can save more and get a really close shave with double edge razor blades but you will have to be very careful or your shave will be too close!
You can just stop shaving like these guys.

The loss of product by the case at the loading dock was a definite problem, according to a local talk show host.
That they are. They're also damn dangerous if your face isn't accustomed to blade shaving (and you don't do the necessary preliminaries such as oil and decent shaving soap as I didn't). People like me who have used an electric for decades and are transitioning back need to realize that their faces have little bitty bumps that a Feather will plane off in a single stroke and you'll never feel a thing. Then you look at the mirror and call 911.
It's difficult to find any blades made in the United States anymore. Personna is the only brand I know; perhaps there are others but they aren't well-advertised. Baby Bro sent me a Care package full of blades of various origin - he collects them - and prominently on top was a styptic pencil and a box of bandaids. I got the message.

Frugal Dude pack comes to my door and lasts well over a year. Love it.
I have the same razor and love it. Use Feather blades and Prorasso shave cream. Best shave I’ve ever had.
I have a double edge razor which I have probably had for around 50 years. I had not used it in maybe 40 but around a year ago, I found a brand new pack of double edge blades which are name brand but no one knows how old they actually are.
I decided to try it out and to my surprise it gives perfectly acceptable shaves. Like you said, you have to be a little more careful.
Still the new ones do a little better so no point in using it but if I had to I could certainly live with it.
That’s what I use, the Merkur 34C, and with Wilkinson Sword safety blades. Great shave.
