The population of Denver has been steadily growing over the past few years, but not enough of its new inhabitants want to work in the restaurant industry.
The reason? The higher-paying jobs are in weed, man.
New eateries are popping up all over Denver to meet the increased demand of residents and tourists, but restaurant owners claim theyre having a hard time filling their kitchens with able-bodied workers, Bloomberg reports.
Our work force is being drained by the pot industry, Denver restaurateur Bryan Dayton told the site.
Enter the weed business, which pays $22 an hour with full benefits, added Dayton. You can come work in a kitchen for (me) for eight hours a day, in a hot kitchen. Its a stressful life. Or you can go sort weed in a climate-controlled greenhouse. Its a pretty obvious choice.
So why dont restaurant owners just pay a little more? Quite simply, the marijuana industry can generally afford to pay workers at various levels much higher wages, they argue.

Slightly off topic, but I’m in Michigan where medical marijuana is legal, and possession (in my town) of an oz or less for rec use is not enforced.
Now pot shops outnumber bars by at least 6 to 1, by my estimation. Restaurants that don’t serve alcohol are plenty and seem to be doing well.
Banning tobacco use in bars has pretty much killed the local tavern industry.
You don’t eat at a restaurant after using. You hot a fast food joint
“The problem is these jobs produce nothing of real value to society.”
The lack of these jobs would produce lower wages and unemployment.
So yes, these jobs do produce something of value.
Since mj was legalized in OR, and my county is one of the highest pot growing areas (was before, too) no one can find anyone to do any work. They make a lot more than this article says trimming, being a security guard or growing it. It’s “legal” but hardly any grow operations are permitted, so it’s still mostly black market. Crime sky rocketed, too. Lots of shady types moved in to grow it.
No LE presence out in the rural areas, I live in one, so I see it. It’s not a pretty sight.
If the pot industry in Colorado is paying workers $22 an hour with benefits then demand for their product must be sky high. Must be a run on city hall in Denver to open up 7-Eleven and AM PM franchises in the area.
In order for there to be a mj “industry”< there needs to be an increasing number of stoners. Which means a larger pool of stupid drugged out people. Especially younger ones, so their brains get permanently damaged easier.
It’s a shame. A country with a large percentage of dopers is a society on the way down.
I've often thought the same thing of the cruise ship industry.
No, I make good money so I go to a great restaurant and eat the best g-damn food I can afford and have a great time. And while I am there, I insult the shit out of the Underhills.
Nope. They are saying the pot industry is hiring away the waiters and cooks, stoned or not. Higher pay, better working environment, not to mention employee discounts, five-fingered and otherwise. The restaurants are screwed.
I would say half of the government jobs produce nothing of value to society.
Bet Taco Bell is experiencing BOOMING business. Munchies at 3am.
Fletch, is that you?
” Its that the pot growers pay so much more.”
They do want to attract the cream of the crop, so to speak.
They’re afraid there are microphones hidden in the huevos rancheros, and why are they playing that military music? Who stole my fork?
Highly dubious statement, given the numbers for 2016 =>

Obviously, society disagrees with you. Otherwise, the pot industry would be going bust, not thriving.
I see great sales ahead for microwave meals.
I’m not in the drug game anymore (except for a beer or two), so what are these guys buying with their $22 an hour? It’s gotta be doing the economy some good. Video games maybe?
