Will be taking a 4-day trip to DC this summer. Any recommendations on what to see and where to eat? We lucked up on a good hotel (normally $600 a night for $100 two blocks from the Whitehouse.) Have already contacted our Senator about getting approval to tour.
I'll sit back and enjoy (while writing things down.) Also tell me what to avoid.
Thanks!
Amazing place to be a little kid...run wildly all you want, the sky is a blue vault above you, and life is eternal.
Yes, indeed.
For a panoramic view go to the top of the Washington Monument. Nothing is allowed to be taller than it in DC. Air and Space is a must and the National Gallery if you are into art.
Is it open again after the earthquake?
The building I lived in is now a 1.7 million dollar condo. They did not even have the subway when I lived there but DC transit ran every five minutes,it was yucky in mid summer with B.O. My hubby and I used to window shop on Connecticut ave,I used to worship at st Mathews cathedral. I miss it.
Oops nevermind. The Washington Monument is closed until the spring of 2019 while they modernize the elevator. Seems an awful long closure but that’s the government for you.
It’s open...unless the elevators are down again, which is often. If you’re fit enough to walk to the top of the monument, there are interesting etchings carved into the walls...least there used to be. Haven’t done the monument climb for decades.
Oops, xp38, read your post after I posted.
Where did you live? I work at Thomas Circle, just down from Logan Circle.
See Mount Vernon and Gunston Hall.
Be off the streets before dark.
Rock creek park was awesome also. The navy yard has been there forever. The Potomac river, the C and O canal running parallel with it,real history.. I really miss living with history every day.
Sigh. I always say I would never want to be a kid again, but...some of those things you painted that picture of...well, I could do those again.
There are great galleries, museums and other indoor spaces.
For me, I like the monuments and the grand vistas.
I took one seven hour fast tour (your teen boys might like this) and took my metro pass and my running shoes and saw the outside and lobby of anything and everything.
The great Lee home at the top of Arlington Cemetery is a must see vista. Read up on it first. The Vietnam Memorial, Jefferson, Lincoln etc etc.
Take your guide book and map. get your metro pass and map.
See how many things you can get to in two water bottles each and seven hours. You will be amazed.

It’s difficult to read a post in less than a second. :)
Remembering is making me smile,I really loved it. We walked down to the ellipse to see the lighting of the Christmas tree, and we lay down on the grass watching the fireworks, took walks at cherry blossom festival at Jefferson memorial. I believe they are blooming right now.
Oh yeah there are endless things to do, but strangely for me I do not miss the area that much. I lived there for almost 40 years. From the mid 60’s to 2004. Of course I would leave for periods of time. I had tried California in the 80s and found out I really wasn’t laid back enough for that area. 8>) I tried Las Vegas for awhile but couldn’t stay away from the gaming tables. 8>) Then I tried south Florida for awhile, didn’t speak Spanish, and I didn’t like drinking every day. 8>) So after a while I would return back to Northern Virginia. But the traffic there became so unbearable that my wife & I moved to Louisiana so she could be near her dad who is in his 90s. I think he will outlive me, LOL.
The Air and Space Museum is awesome. Ford’s Theater and the house across the road where President Lincoln passed.
It’s beautiful...
