Although its still putting together its enforcement policy for when the light rail system goes cashless in July, Port Authority said Friday it does not intend to use racial profiling or other methods to identify illegal immigrants.
The authority explained its plans after a handful of riders expressed concerns at the agencys monthly board meeting that it would use fare checks to identify people with improper immigration papers.
The authority expects to switch to a prepaid system on the T in July, where riders will be on the honor system for paying their fare. To encourage payment, the authority will assign its police officers to conduct random checks on T cars and issue citations to those who cant prove they paid with a pre-paid ConnectCard or a receipt for an individual fare.

Unless the purpose is to stir up emotions.
A money making entity will make money in a way other than by using cash.
And we're not going to racially profile you, niether !
Ain't we wonderful ?!!
Sorry for not including the barf alert. The title was barfy enough itself, though.
The T has been free of charge within the Triangle for decades, with outbound trips on buses and light rail requiring fare payment while exiting the vehicle. This is going to lead to even lower fare recovery ratio and demands for higher subsidy; and the costs will go up with the requirements for more “fare enforcement” inspectors, some with police powers. (See where this is going?)
honor system , LOL
Martians won’t be profiled? What other race is green like money?
Skrulls, I thought.
What a stupid business model. Pay up, taxpayers!
IMO this is a nothing burger. San Jose Light Rail has had this system for years. Every once in a while a couple of transit cops get on the rain, one per car, and check everybody for a ticket. No racial profiling. Done.
These same transit agencies that “complain” about having 50 percent “fare recovery ratio” on buses and trains (only half of costs covered by fares) are the same ones that institute “honor” systems on the light rail and end up with 7 percent fare recovery ratio (93 percent subsidy).
Streetcar conductors are going to enforce immigration law.
RIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.
Or it’s a ratburger.
IOW, if it’s likely to work, don’t use it. That’s why libs object to the WALL!
The fines have to be heavy to make it work.
I rode the subway system in Munich a few years ago, which also has/had an honor system. I paid, but it’s my understanding that the fines are heavy if you get caught not paying.
NP ... The titles from the lamestream are rich in content for ridicule and comment material
Drivers are paying for it. We now have the highest gas tax in the country. Our retarded republican legislature and governor foisted this on us, supposedly to pay for badly needed road and bridge repairs but really to bail out the mass transit money pits.
Oh yes, I noticed the PA gas tax jumped on Jan. 1.
so....I can ride the T for free so long as I dress like the Frito Bandito and Port Authority cops are afraid to approach me?
yes.
