WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD FEBRUARY 24, 2017
freerepublic | 2/24/2017 | greeenyes

Posted on 02/24/2017 5:10:36 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

The idea of the Russian hat came about when my sister said she looked like Vladimir Putin.

No, I said.

Vladimir Putin looks like HER! :-)

I think they really do know.

I shudder to think what Penny would do if anyone gave me any trouble. She has jaws like a crocodile.

I suggest putting some alfalfa pellets in with your leaves. They will promote the breakdown of the leaves.

Oh My... I dare not show this to Lady Bender as roses do not do well here in Benderville due to diseases. Clematis does very well here however...

My vines wither like that from two reasons:

1. they need to be watered at night

OR

2. thrips, (stink-bugs) are sucking on them at night. We have some little-bitty thrips (I think that’s the name) here that are hard to see. At night they come out suck at the base of the vine but they seem to hide in the soil by day. Sheets of cardboard really help with that as does mild insecticide (either chemical or organic like ‘7-dust) Once the vines get about three fee long they seem to be fine. W

Well, they’ve had almost two weeks to shore them up, so one would hope they did it... but our liberal leadership may have spent the money on posters or spotted owls or something by now...

Yes running a mower over leaves a good way to get them to decompose faster.

Doesn’t matter how long the vines get. They always die wilt and die before the fruit ripens. It’s not the water.

Anybody know of a plant or lawn fertilizer that has tiny, green, round, slow-release orbs in it? I see them in commercial potting soil all the time, but can’t find what brand of fertilizer it is anywhere.
