Mysterious ancient human society was run by a 'female elite'

And that is why they disappeared.

And then one day, they all just...disappeared.

Mr. Mercat and I spent several weeks in southern and eastern Mexico in the early 70s. I vaguely remember two villages which were matriarchy. The women were generally larger. In one of the villages the men wore white pleated skirts. In the other village I don’t even remember seeing men. Weird. Oh, and a policeman ran us down on foot, flagging us down and blowing his whistle as we were driving by. We were afraid he was going to arrest us but we stopped anyway. Turned out he just wanted a ride to the next town.

So did the "girls-power" elites build the giant stone mansions? Or was that .... GASP! ... men?

The society collapsed around the time that ancient cars were invented.

I remember a woman friend talking to me about a female-run society she had read about, where the men owned none of the property, didn't live with the woman he had sex with, but only visited her at night. She said a woman could signal she didn't want a man any more by turning her tent so it faced a different direction.

I upset her when I pointed out that, in such a society, the men had no incentive to stick around when the next band of barbarians came over the hill. With no permanence to keep them, the incentive to be to say "Y'know, I think there are some women who are just as cute as what I have available here, over that next hill".

The whole "turning the tent" situation would be disadvantageous to women over the long run. In a stable living situation, the man needs a good reason to move out. In a situation where he doesn't live with the women, she needs to daily give him a reason to show up. The closest modern example is the "inner city", where women live by themselves with their kids, and a "baby daddy" occasionally shows up.

“Matrilineal” does not equate to “Matriarchal”.

It just means that your family lineage, identity and history is determined by who your mother was.

Actually, Jewish custom is very similar.

As a famous Jewish commenter once said., it's 100% certain who your mother was - your father, not so much.

...But it’s also possible that the remains represent the experience of just one elite family, and not all of Chacoan society...

I’ve been to Chaco Canyon four or five times. It is interesting to say the least.

HOWEVER, there is strong evidence that very few people ever lived in the massive complex. It may have really been a central religious/ceremonial complex or a so-called “food distribution center.” There has been recent work done on the astronomical aspect of the complex, in particular there is one geological butte that has the equinox and solstice designations found commonly elsewhere.

I am skeptical of this particular article.

'Studying how societies like the Chacoans passed power is central to our understanding of why complex societies rise and fall,'

"elite status was passed down through the maternal line from 800-1130AD."

I wonder what the US will be like 330 years after giving women the right to vote.
