A North Carolina woman says her insurance was canceled because of a picture of her dog on Facebook.
Melina Efthimiadis and her husband say they are low risk clients. However, when they tried to add personal umbrella liability to their homeowner's insurance, Nationwide canceled their policy, according to WTVD.
Efthimiadis said she had included the family's three dogs a Shih Tzu, a hound and a Lab/hound mix on the application, but the company claimed they had failed to disclose that they owned a Rottweiler mix, considered a dangerous breed.
The mix-up apparently came from Efthimiadis' own Facebook photo of her pups playing in the snow.
"They sent us the pictures that they had taken off of my Facebook page of my dog Zeus who is a Lab/hound mix," she told WTVD.
Melina, who works as a veterinarian, was able to prove it to the company and Nationwide Insurance reversed its decision.
In the end, however, Melina said they decided to switch to another insurance company anyway.
"Be careful of what you post on Facebook," she told the station. "It's sad that you can't post pictures of your beloved pet on your own Facebook page and have it public."
NOTHING is personal on social media.
And it never goes away.
You shouldn't even be ON facebook.
Free Republic can satisfy any and all needs for information you should have.
What your neighbor's kids wore to the prom is not necessary information in life.
Anyone else concerned about this snoooing on Facebook?
On the other hand people voluntarily put things on Facebook. But clearly we see things you out on Facebook can be used against you.
Dump FakeBook
I do not do facebook.
I guess Nationwide wasn’t On Their Side.
Profile pictures and background banner pics are public on FB.
I’ve never gotten into Facebook; don’t see the value in it.
But I can see if you put details of your life out there, people will be able to see and use it, for purposes you never thought of.
IMO Facebook is beyond silly, frivolous and worthless. But,as I understand this particular situation,I have no problem with what Nationwide did.IMO this is akin to Nationwide sending an employee out to photograph a recipient of disability payments (for a back injury) and finding that person doing things he/she shouldn’t be able to do if the claim was legit.
I wasn't until last year. There is a community group that shares information to keep residents informed about crime and other such threats, shenanigans of the local gov and local events. FB is excellent for that. Sharing personal information? I don't get why people do that on FB.
Insurance companies can cancel policies for any reason, or no reason at all.
I had it done to me by State Farm insurance. Had multiple policies for over two decades with them. They just dropped three classic auto policies with no explanation whatsoever.
This was around the time when the feds bailed them out, and they turned into a commercial bank. Called my agent, and he was beside himself with what they were doing. I told him I didn’t blame him personally, he was a good guy, but I cancelled all of my policies with them, and went elsewhere.
Somewhat off topic, a friend died recently. HE had a large Facebook page. Actually was a nice summation of things he had been doing in life in recent years. I wonder what happens to Facebook accounts like his which are now dormant?
And imagine 50, or 100 years from now, who will “own” social media and other internet presences we all have, when we all will pass on at some point????
It’s probably better than finding out you are not covered after your dog bites the neighbor.
You’re correct. Facebook is run by a liberal hypocrite who supports totalitarian regimes and censors content all over the world. Including removing anything that goes against his worldview.
Sometimes I don’t understand why people care if insurance companies don’t want to give you coverage.
It’s like a gas station not wanting to sell you gas, or a university not wanting to let you attend their classes.
Dude, Dime a dozen. For everyone that doesn’t want to take your money, there’s another 100 that will bend over backwards to take/STEAL your money.
Yes, a FREEDOM OF IDENTITY.
Lockdown Facebook
Full-Delete from FaceBook & all Social Media
