I'll take a stab at it.
One side of a battle is defeated, led by Fenwick. The leader of the other side says to tell him who Fenwick is and he will spare all others.
So, in a Spartacus like way, Fenwick starts to identify himself, but others claim they are Fenwick.
But, doofus comes up and says "Hey Fenwick" and thereby betrays the identity of Fenwick. The gag is that he has a shield with vertical stripes. He tells Fenwick that his shield had horizontal stripes.
Well, the people on the victorious side find this very humorous. He has not only told them who Fenwick is, he is also a first class dolt, because he was too stupid to know that if he had rotated his shield, he would have had horizontal stripes, not vertical stripes.

Everyone is trying to do an "I am Spartacus" moment to hide who the real Fenwick (probably the commander) is. Then Mr. Clueless reveals to the enemy who is Fenwick. The shield itself isn't important other than a gimmick to give an excuse for Mr. Clueless to talk to Fenwick.
It follows along well with other Southwest Airline commercials of embarrassing yourself and wanting to get away.
And you can't turn the shield 90 degrees because the grip gives a definite up and down.

So... I'm guessing you didn't get the joke in September of 2004 when all of the FReepers were posting: "I am Buckhead!" either.

Pretty much a very easy to understand commercial.
And the first time I saw it I laughed :)
He ####ed Fenwick lol
And he’s so stupid he thinks he has the wrong shield.

It still begs the question: who wants to “get away” now, Fenwick or doofus?

Noooo the guy with the shield is not Fenwick, he walks up to Fenwick and calls him by name.

Never saw the commercial before. I thought this thread was referring to the movie, “The Mouse that Roared”. In that movie, a tiny European principality, Fenwick, invades and conquers the US.

If you read the second one down on your link you would find...
About Southwest Airlines Wanna Get Away Sale TV Commercial, ‘I Am Fenwick’
Do you want to get away? Fenwick probably does. He’s a warrior in an army and the opposing side has just asked him to identify himself. Many of his brothers in arms identify themselves as “Fenwick” in an attempt to save him, but then a man comes up looking for Fenwick’s help to find his shield. The shield he’s holding has two vertical stripes on it but his, he says, has horizontal stripes. He could’ve just rotated his shield, but now Fenwick is going to have a hard time of it. Southwest Airlines is offering one-way flight deals during its Wanna Get Away Sale.

Oh, so it’s not a Fenwick commercial, but a Southwest Airlines commercial. Do be precise next time.
