Man Receives $128 Fine for Warming up Car in His Driveway
NBC Miami ^ | JANUARY 9, 2017 | K. QUERRY

Police often warn car owners to not leave their cars unattended while warming them up on the driveway.

Officials say leaving your car running is an open invitation for thieves who want to make a quick getaway.

But it wasn’t thieves who targeted Taylor Trupiano’s vehicle.

Trupiano, a Michigan resident, said many people have to warm up their cars for several minutes in the brutal Michigan winter.

However, he didn’t know that he would be fined for it.

After leaving his car running in the driveway for several minutes, he came outside to find a ticket on his windshield.

The Roseville Police Department gave Trupiano a $128 fine for leaving the keys in the ignition with the motor running and no one around.

WXYZ reports that there is no state law against leaving your car running, but several cities have ordinances against the practice.

I’ve read numerous articles that “warming up” a car for the engine’s sake (as opposed to heating the interior) is not necessary for modern engines.

what is considered modern? some of us have older cars... mine is a 1999...

“Another law protecting us from ourselves.”

Actually, another law raising money for the city bureaucracy.

Mine doesn’t require the keys to be in an ignition for remote start.

Go back and read the original post.

This only happens because people submit and put up with it.

Problem comes when folks living in a tight, packed in neighborhood do this. Car exhaust can make it into the house next door. Enough to set off a CO detector. As laws go, for urban application, it doesn’t bug me.

That would serve a thief right. Don’t take what’s not yours and there are no problems.

I left my truck running for most of the day last week. Cold outside, equipment batteries and spray paint inside the truck stayed nice and warm.

First thing I did when I bought the truck is make a bunch of spare keys (thank goodness they didn’t have the expensive chips in them!). I have the key in the ignition running, and lock the doors with the key fob in my pocket.

Although I bet “they” could have got me for crimes against humanity as per UN Regulation 666 for “Egregious emissions of global warming gases”.

My best friend from Key West Florida Who has sailed all over the world and did a little federal prison time for running weed from Colombia back in the 80s now has a thriving charter service at Little Palm and does not suffer fools gladly

Anyhow he and I and my three lads are doing the Rockies two Halloweens past and we’re in Aspen at the Jerome where caddy corner there is a fancy shell station with a deli

Anybody knows Aspen knows exactly where I’m talking about

He turns on the pump and it’s of course cold at 9000 feet and out of nowhere this smarmy Kali hipster walks over and proceeds to lecture my friend that he’s destroying the planet by wasting fuel

My buddy looks at him and tells him it’s not his business and if he gets closer in his face he’s gonna make him regret it

Man that dude started running he was so scared

We all laughed our asses off

I don’t like folks in my kool aid either

Here, in northern Michigan, in Charlevoix, a beautiful, safe, small resort town on northern Lake Michigan, we leave our cars running while we are shopping in the supermarkets to keep them warm. Nobody ever bothers them or takes things from them to my knowledge. Crime is almost nonexistant here.

I’d be the one that gets sued and sent to the klink since I would be some kind of oppressor by having something the thief didn’t.

We had a week of close to Zero degree nights up here in Michigan last week.

This cop that wrote the ticket is an ass. Butt Plug extraordinare. Who in their right mind would do something in such temperatures?

Expecially given that in Michigan it is Illegal to drive a vehicle with any obstruction on the front window... (written to address those that don’t clear/scrape the snow/ice off in the Winter.)

I don’t have a garage so it takes close to 15 minutes to warm up enough to melt all the frost and ice.

I used to envy those people that lived out in the sticks that seemed to be able to make a living. Now I’m one of them and I gotta say that stories like this are hard to take. The lack of freedom in the cities is Orwellian.

A cop would have to drive up a 1/6 mile long driveway to get to my house and ticket me. It’s amazing how you can control people when you have them all packed together.

During the brutal winter of 1977 (two straight weeks when the high temp didn't go above 0°F) a guy with a Lincoln Continental across the parking lot from my apartment started his car at night and let it run all night so he could start it next morning. Unfortunately, that was the period when Ford was having issues with cars slipping into gear without the driver and his beast backed up across the lot and smashed up my little Datsun. But getting a ticket for letting a privately owned automobile on private property run for a few minutes on gas paid for by a private individual is pure BS. The officer ought to be named and shamed.

You and the man who told you that are 100% correct. Any motor should get temperatures of the fluids within it close to the temperatures they are designed to work at before operation. For example it was 0 degrees this morning here and all fluids within the Jeep liberty had jelled....the oil/power steering/transmission fluid etc...let alone the need for the anti-freeze to heat in order to make the cab bearable....you are always better off warming any vehicle up.
