‘Small’ anaconda pulled out of toilet in Virginia apartment

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Animal Control Officers in Arlington received a big surprise last week while responding to a snake call inside an apartment bathroom – Anaconda big!

Arlington County Animal Control said they received a call for a snake inside an apartment toilet, something that isn’t that unusual.

However, this wasn’t just any snake, it was a juvenile yellow anaconda that was nearly 5 feet long.

On a yellow anaconda scale, that is actually quite small. Fully grown yellow anacondas can be up to 13 feet long and over 100 pounds.

Officials say Officer Brenys White was able to safely remove the snake from the toilet and bring it back to the shelter, where staff got quite the surprise.

The yellow anaconda stayed at the shelter for a few days until they were able to find a specialist familiar with the species who could give him the care that he needed.

“They need specialized care and housing, and while they are non-venomous, can be dangerous when they reach full size and are not well-socialized,” the Animal Welfare League of Arlington wrote on its Facebook page.

The shelter is still investigating how the snake got inside the toilet, but say it was likely abandoned and went into the toilet seeking food like rats and mice.

“We highly encourage anyone thinking about having a snake as a pet to do extremely thorough research to determine whether they will be able to adequately care for their snake,” the shelter added.

You're a good daughter. :-)

My father was so petrified of snakes that he joined the Navy in WWII to preclude the possibility of being drafted into the army and having to crawl through snake-infested (as he imagined them) fields.

Until the day he died, if there was a snake shown on a TV show, he couldn't change the channel fast enough.

I'm pretty much the same; I consider you to be very, very brave.

Salamander,
The snake came through the plumbing from the septic system.
Like I said. It was a rural area. We had well water and a septic tank with leach field pipes. It had to come though there, because the toilet seat was down and there was no other way in.

I’ve seen quite a few possums, mostly dead on the side of the road. Never seen a soaking wet one. Thanks!

I found this site with some good pictures; I recall the snake swimming below the water surface which would fit the water snake description:

> More likely a brown water snake.

Nope, my dad killed it and brought it with us to the emergency room where they identified it as a moccasin. Plus, it think the 2 big fangs that broke off in my hand could only come from a venomous viper.

I’m surprised this is described as “something that isn’t that unusual” in Arlington County VA, but nobody else has commented on that so I must lead a sheltered life.

I would have commented earlier on this interesting observation, but I was still trying to pick myself up off the floor....

Not really...I did all that for the snake’s sake, not dad.

:D

If he’d seen it, he’d have killed it, with extreme prejudice.

My whole childhood was spent grabbing up every snake I found, much to his horror.

I cannot count the snakes he saw in our yard, then ran into the house to get a gun but when he came back, the snake was “gone”.

I moved really fast, back then.

;)

Yep, they are.

I remember seeing the world’s first Pied Ball Python at Repticon.

It was for sale at $25,000.

People have no idea how much money new morphs can bring.
