The passing of George Michael this week reminded many of the seemingly short life expectancy of musicians (and performers in general). In fact, as on study found, while blues, jazz, and country singers typically live as long as the average American; rock, techno, punk, metal, rap, and hip hop stars die significantly sooner.
I hope I die before I get old, The Whos Roger Daltrey sang in My Generation in 1965. This didnt happen for Daltrey, who is now a ripe 71, but it did to many other musicians.
Dianna Theadora Kenny, a professor of psychology and music at the University of Sydney, has conducted a statistical study of premature death among musicians.
As The Washington Post notes, she found that musicians from older genres including blues, jazz, country and gospel have similar lifespans to American people their own age. The life expectancy for R&B musicians is slightly lower, while the life expectancy for newer genres like rock, techno, punk, metal, rap and hip hop is significantly shorter.

How do musicians die? Drugs drugs drugs drugs and booze
Drugs should not have been lumped in with "Accidental." There should be a "Drug" column.
Rap/Hip Hop musicians are in a very dangerous line of work.

And unnatural sex. Freddie Mercury.
Not always true! I lost my best friend this year to “Man’s” cancer. Only 56.
Coach Leonard Skinner outlived all but one of the original line up of Lynrd Skynrd, the band named after him.
I imagine Keith will die when our sun goes supernova.
It’s not any easy life.
I notice there is no mention of classical music.
Does it exist any more?
“Its not any easy life”
That is true! I’m retired, but played 5 to 7 nights a week plus studio work. It was exhausting! Touring? I can’t imagine!
How musicians die...
When they stop composing, and start decomposing.

I can’t either. Just the traveling alone must be so difficult. Sleeping in a strange bed, eating out, being on stage for hours. I can’t imagine it.
Roger Daltrey is an exercise and fitness nut. He is in better shape than most men half his age. The same goes for Springsteen. He is able to give four hour concerts several days a week on tour even though he is eligible for Social Security.
Nothing new — see Faust.
Marty: Your first drummer was uh....

Marty: And he was replaced by...uh....
David: Stumpy Joe - Eric Stumpy Joe Childs.
Marty: What happened to Stumpy Joe?
Derek: Well, uh, it’s not a very pleasant story...but, uh, he died...
uh...he choked on...the ac- the official explanation was he
choked on vomit.
David: He passed away.
Nigel: It was actually, was actually someone else’s vomit. It’s not....
David: It’s ugly.
Nigel: You know. There’s no real....
Derek: You know they can’t prove whose vomit it was...they don’t
have the facilities at Scotland Yard....
David: You can’t print, there’s no way to print a spectra-photograph...
Nigel: You can’t really dust for vomit.
That is a bunch of bad data and tells you little but misinformation.
One can take from the data that hip hop artists don’t die of cancer.
Bad, assumption.
Yes, if you get murdered, you won’t die of cancer.
Such a funny movie!
adding up the %s in the top roll yields roughly 75% of deaths for any cause. They left off quite a few categories and you can’t tell if drugs/alcohol are included in accident deaths or not. I would assume that “accidental” ODs are included there, but one can’t be certain. It could be a category completely outside the chart.
