After generations of his family spent their lives as outlaws for making the infamous Irish poitín, Pádraic Ó Griallais has finally been able to carry out the family business in the open just under a decade after the spirit was outlawed.
Taking a career break from his job as a high school teacher to establish a new business based on his old family recipe, Ó Griallais is free to produce and sell the highly alcoholic spirit as he pleases without the interference of the Gardaí [Irish police], who hounded the previous poitín distillers in his family with raids to put a stop to the production of the beverage that was outlawed from 1661 to 1997 due to excise regulations.
The production of the spirit was regulated by the Irish Department of Agriculture in 1997 but only under their specific regulations. Luckily the regulations still allow Ó Griallais to use the botanical bogbean that grows around his familys homeland around Indreabhán, County Galway, that makes their specific recipe so special.

The Cabin Window
No matter how rude the cabin,
The window will face to the scene,
Of Winters fresh carpet of glory,
Or Summers lush meadow of green.
The windows a part of the inside,
It makes the insidedness right.
For it shows what youre trying to keep away,
The storms, and the bumps in the night!
Like a magnet that has both a north and a south,
Our comforts align the same way.
While you stare at your pleasant warm fire,
The window will show the cold day.
For while your feet are in slippers,
As you snuggle down all of your toes,
The window displays the rain and the wind,
As a lullaby helping you doze.

The radarthing shows an area of snow extending from Portland to Raleigh.. Not far enough inland to get Tax Chick, but NNB, you and I are seeing it..
And two of the three cats that go outdoors are doing the 'I want out' and then 'It's miserable out here, why did you let me out' thing in 15 - 20 minute cycles.. The third of that trio has decided that it is nicer sitting on Beautiful Daughter's lap..
I took down my Christmas day-cor, too — 16 cards!
My son and his wife got a new car today, so I’m glad someone is benefiting from the new year! When I realized my rent went up farther than the SSA increase, I decided this may not be such a good year, after all.
However, I will, with the move in mind, make it as good as I possibly can. And in a few minutes, I may go build a box and put some books in it. What a good idea! ;o]
We had another visit from the husky who was here a few days ago. Elen got her on the leash, and the owner was tracked down through the subdivision’s Facebook page. I’ve got their phone number saved for the next time, and I advertised the girls as dog-walkers/sitters.
Our snow and ice accumulation, such as it was, is rapidly melting in the warm sun, even though it’s officially below freezing. We’ll be able to get to church tomorrow with no trouble.
I never get tired of your poetry, Bob. Thanks!
Quite a few years ago, my sister sent me a small volume of the most popular poems by the most well-known poets. I drag it out periodically, thumb through it, and try to find a poem to fit my moods. You have a knack of posting poems I didn’t know I needed to read. So thank you again, Bob!
I'm watching it -- through my window.
My radar show that it will be over in a couple of hours, for me. The snowing, not the snow.
Why is there so much of it in the driveway?
Because that is where the snow plow driver left it.
Your tax dollars at work.
I miss having a dog, but I think the only one I would consider would be a husky. I might look into it when I get settled, but for now, I don’t want one. There are too many dogs in this complex that aren’t taken care of properly, and I don’t want to worry about whether my dog will be attacked by someone’s vicious little nervous rat. And there are way too many of those here.
Huskies like lots of long, fast walks.
But I swear he times it to just when we have cleared the driveway.
I think I am going to close up early today. Not a single customer since 10:00 this morning.
All the huskies I’ve had are terrible clowns and pulling is what they do, so “walk” is not their intention when you are on the other end of the leash.
If I could find a spinster, I could certainly keep her in a good supply of fur!
Roses are red,
Soylent is green,
Get to the sherlter
It’s 2017
~acraigl
BWAHAHAHA! I could almost hear you singing that as you drive down the road! LOL!!
You need to put it to the Freddy Fender melody:
Roses are reeeed, my love,
Soylent is gree-e-e-eeen ...
The dog was dragging me down the sidewalk at a vigorous pace. I even ran a few times! I was just starting to feel like it was my beautiful dog when the phone rang ...
Oh, well. If we ever get Bill and Tom out, we’ll get another greyhound.
*tagline*
That is an excellent idea! I'm sure the greyhound will be eternally grateful!
But Jake and Shannon might not take it so well, especially Shannon. She’s almost 11 now and very set in her ways. You should have heard what she called me yesterday when I took her blanket away to wash it. “Oh, shut up,” I said. “You can sleep on Tom’s clean clothes for a few hours.”
Sally sometimes says, “Dang, Shannon! And you wash yourself with that mouth?”
