One thing that has always amused me is why Italian-Americans are not considered Latins or Latinos (which also means "Latin" in Italian). To get an idea of how absurd this is, Italians (or their ancestors) were the original Latins. On top of that Italians are definitely more Latin than the residents of many countries considered to be populated by Latinos. An example is Mexico where folks entirely Indian or Mestizo are considered Latino in this country but Italian-Americans are not.
I'm figuring this has strictly to do with affirmative action programs. Still, it is amusing that the original Latin people are not considered "Latino" in the USA.
p.s. Are people whose ancestors are all from Spain considered "Latino?" If so this makes the fact that Italian-Americans are not considered Latin(o) even more absurd.
Read the book “Are Italians White?” Once not considered white.
And Joe DiMaggio’s mother was deported back to Italy in WW2.
When I got back to Dallas, people started coming up and speaking to me in Spanish.
When I said, "Non se habla Espanol" they looked at me with disbelief. One guy replied to me in English, "You're kidding, right?"
Of course, the Brits used to say, "WOGs begin at Calais."
If I move to MEXICO, am I an American Mexican? If I move to AFRICA, am I an American African?, heh heh
I’m Italian, Sicilian, and Spanish, and I’ve never looked at myself as “hispanic” or “Latin”. I also don’t see myself as a hyphenated American. I bleed Red, White, and Blue, and resent those who attempt to Balkanize themselves with the hyphen.
Good afternoon.
“I bleed Red, White, and Blue,”
And that hurts.

Exactly! I’m 3rd generation New Yawk born, so I’m NATIVE AMERICAN!
I think the problem is the words LATINO & HISPANIC:
It is NOT a race of people. There are very white, very black, all shades of brown, Mestizo, Indians etc.
It is NOT a language. They throw the Brazilians in there, and include south American Indians who do not even speak Spanish
It is NOT a religious group, there are many religions in South America
It is NOT a nationality
The closest thing you could say is that they were conquered by the Spaniards, BUT even that does not fit because the Brazilians were not conquered by the Spanish.
The Philippines, which WERE conquered by the Spanish are NOT considered Latins or Hispanic.
It’s all very confusing
