OK sorry Jim about the single whining waste of space.
Really I am.
I don't usually post stuff like this. But I just am in the mood to rant after I clicked onto the Los Angeles Times website from the Drudgereport, based on a link there, and was clobbered with more nonsense than I believed possible.

Free to you choices to help you.
Try Adblock Plus. Free for several common browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Opera, IE and Edge.
Separately, if you want to limit/eliminate the Google search trail and leave it cold, try Startpage. There are others too.
A recent secure browser alternative is “Brave” built by the person who designed Firefox after he left them. This one is relatively new, but has good potential and easy, intuitive interface.
Avast “free” Antivirus also offers Avast SafeZone Browser.

Opera Browser.
Worth noting, the browser “Opera” includes a free Virtual Personal Network (VPN) built into the browser. This can be very beneficial to limit/eliminate unwanted viewing of your Internet connections especially important for on line banking or purchasing. I think of it like running water down a pipe that others cannot see except at both ends verses running water down an open trough for all to see, monitor, record and limit. As a side benefit, a VPN keeps the Internet provider/cable company from knowing you are streaming a video whereby they reduce your download speed accordingly over time.
Another thought, consider rebooting your router and modem sometimes/periodically to change the temporary IP (I think this is the right term or close like dynamic) addressing to keep your IP provider from reducing your speeds and volume over time. I know one IT person who shuts his home one off for a couple days periodically to make sure the temp IP changes which helps keep others from sniffing etc. He just uses another source for a couple of days.
I hope this can help.
I thought the same thing. I guess he continued it into his post.
Strange.
No, not to me.
PS. I think the October 1, 2016 Internet oversight give away by USA is the bigger danger.

no ads.
Haha sorry about that.
Just checked the box. No particular reason.
Anyway sorry for the vanity post. I feel much better now. Again mods feel free to delete, or leave it here, I will now return to responsible FReeping.
(insofar as I am ever responsible)
:D
there used to be something on the market called Black Ice. Used it for years and it blocked access from the outside to one’s IP address
BettingExpert exit Russia; did Operas built-in VPN rile censors?
The important part is in the last paragraph:
Opera, which recently announced that it had sold its browser business to a Chinese consortium in a $600m deal that is expected to close in Q3 2017 ...
Download the BRAVE browser. It takes ads out. Works great.
Bonus: started up by the guy who invented Firefox browser, the guy who they fired because he supports biblical marriage.
I love it.
In the old days Santa left naughty kids coal in their stockings, now they should be given the Chia Obama.

websites ain’t free
That is true, but more and more websites are so active ad laden as to be nearly useless. Even one of my e-mail services won't run decently unless I run it on a computer with AdBlock Plus.
I have also noticed that (in IE, at least) after browsing sites with ads, sometimes I can close all browser windows, and then go into Task Manager and find instances of the browser still running! This even though the browser is set to delete the browsing history when closing, or if I manually delete the browsing history before closing the last browser window (even if that last step is on a clean site like FR.) I have yet to have anyone explain how these instances of the browser are still running. At least I can kill them in Task Manager.
Now, what I would like is an ad blocking program that allowed the user to screen ads by size, active vs. non-active content, and overall intrusiveness. If something like that became popular, maybe users could "teach" those running web sites to run less obtrusive ads.
I think “Brave” will answer some of your request as a stand alone browser it allows you to choose what type of ads to allow. It allows a distinction between allowing all ads or no ads or just blocking those with scripts or blocking those with fingerprints.
After installing, select the lion in the upper right to see the settings popup. Then select the “Edit default shield settings...” at the bottom left of popup. Select “Shields” on the left hand side. The choices appear.
Does Brave allow the user to change the font face and character size in the Preferences? When I tried Brave a few months ago, this was not yet implemented. The font face and size were hard-coded, and incompatible with my vision.
If the font problem is fixed, I think Brave might be useful for those sites (like the one provided by one of my credit card companies) that are so badly implemented they require NoScript to be temporarily put into "Allow scripts globally" mode.
Get ad blocker.
