It was hook, line and sinker literally for a man who went out fishing over Thanksgiving.
Equipped with only a small rod, Wilmington, North Carolina, resident Riahn Brewington struggled as he tried to pull out a fish from Cape Fear River last week.
He caught a catfish, but not just any catfish: a giant catfish that weighed more than 112 pounds.
The bloated fish was bigger than the top half of Brewingtons body.
Brewington couldnt believe his eyes, and neither could his friends when the fisherman posted his prized catch on Facebook.
Holy Catfish!!! one Facebook user exclaimed.
Is this real life?? another asked.
The North Carolina man assured them that the fish was all too real. It was obvious to many that the fish was a clear candidate for a state record holder, but unfortunately the fish fell a few pounds short.
According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the record holder for biggest catfish is a blue catfish, weighing in at 117 pounds, 8 ounces, caught on June 11.
But Brewington doesnt consider the catch a loss. He released the massive creature in hopes of catching a bigger version of him again someday.
This was huge and Riahn Brewington released him to fight again, said friend and fellow fisherman Dean Hall, who witnessed Brewingtons epic catch in person.
While fishing?
That is definitely one of the best times to hook a 100+ lb catfish.
How did he get it out of the water? Just grabbed it?
Dang. That’s a lake monster for sure.
I was hoping he shook it off the line and got back to fishing.
That jacket’s gonna smell purty.
“while fishing...”
That’s better than hunting for a 112 catfish in the woods.
“Great. Congratulations. Now just drop me back in the channel before you get a hernia!”
what the hell was he using for line, 1/4” aircraft cable?
So that thing hatched in what....1933?
It’s all in the way you play the line. ;-)

No kidding. I hate it when I hook a 100+lb catfish while performing ocular neurosurgery.
“But Honey! It was from the catfish I caught!”
“Oh, yeah??? Where is it?!?”
Catch & Release. I think he could have kept it had he chose to.
Love to fish, but not into huggin’ ‘em.
Take the picture and throw that muddy tasting monster back.
Pretty common in N.C. actually. I hooked a catfish that bent a 00 bass hook straight one night.
At the base of some of the earth dams in Lake James they get 6’ to 7’ long.
[I think he could have kept it had he chose to.]
That would be a chore to fillet a fish that size.
