The NFL's television ratings are down across the board and the league has blamed the decline on the presidential election. However, if that were the biggest reason, we would expect to see a similar decline in the MLB playoffs and that has not been the case.
After posting strong TV ratings during the early rounds of the playoffs, the World Series is off to a huge start with fans, averaging more than 19.0 million viewers through two games, according to Sports Media Watch. That's up 32% from last year and matches the Yankees-Phillies matchup in 2009 for the top-rated World Series in the past 11 years.
Over the last few years, the average World Series game has drawn a TV audience that was comparable to a "Monday Night Football" game. But while the World Series is way up this year, "Monday Night Football's" average audience is down 22%, much like the rest of the NFL.

After 7 games now, I finally realized what is sapping the fun out of football for me. It's the referees. Not a single game goes by now without a huge, consequential issue happening with the officiating. I'm sick of it. It looks--like so much looks these days--like things are rigged sometimes.
Oh that’s the other thing I cannot stand, the announcers! I would pay to see someone shove Joe Buck’s head into a toilet and flush it. And I have to hear him prattle on during the World Series, too.
I think Instant Replay has killed the game. It takes away the flow of the game, when you have a good play, but then you know you’re going to have to wait five minutes to find out if it’s going to stand up, or not.
I say, get rid of Instant Replay, except in the last two minutes of each half, and let the chips fall.
I don’t watch the NFL anymore. The New England circus is part of the reason why I don’t.
Who the heck watches the NBA?! Especially in October?!
I stopped watching long before the current BS. I got tired of watching players celebrate every play like it was a game winning play. I got tired of watching defensive players try to hurt the guy with the ball and in the process miss tackles. The same guy who screwed up a tackle the play before will celebrate with some stupid dance the next play. I got tired of replays making games much longer than necessary. I got tired of announcers acting like players never screw up.
Just a few things.
OVER-PAID, UNDISCIPLINED, attention-seeking PLAYERS, too many commercials, idiot, gossipping, announcers -— many with Left-wing agendas that insult patriotic audiences -— and over-priced home game tickets.
Their playoff season is looooooooooooong.
The ratings are down because WE don’t like being forced to watch scumbags who make millions for playing a game disrespect our country and our way of life. The average NFL fan correlates very closely to the average Trump supporter, and WE are voting with our remotes.
The lying scum in the media don’t want to admit this but to us their “scientific” explanation is just another pack of lies.
Baseball rating up 30% this year over last.
NFL down 24% and dropping.
Basketball. Dont know but I can guess the rating are down and keep doing so until someone dunks these millionaire protesters.
What do you think Vince Lombardi would do to a 2nd string quarterback refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance?
There is a factor no one's mentioning, for the month of October. Those pieces of pink cloth on their uniforms are a constant reminder of how silly the NFL has become.
Your instincts may be correct on the fixed games.
Check out some of the books on sports betting and their impact on sports.
It is a dark world that the leagues do not want you to know about...

We have a winner!
My take on the NFL decline is the amount of advertising during a game. It’s hard to get into a game with all the non-football time.
I also object to the London games. I have subscribed to the Sunday Ticket on Direct off and on for several years. This year will be the last as the dilution of Sunday afternoon games has lowered the value. Sunday night games, Monday night games, and now Thursday Night games that don’t end much before midnight take school age fans out of the market.
You're on to something here.
In the name of protecting quarterbacks, new rules requiring a) extremely subjective interpretations which require 300 pound men to change direction and the target in a split second, sometimes in mid'air...Concussion prevention has brought on..b) a running back cannot lower his helmet, but sometimes he can....c) in the name of safety, kickoffs are now the boringest plays in football.....d) punts are a flagfest because players have learned how to "flop forward" to draw the ubiquitous block in the back penalty. I feel sorry for the refs, too much subjectivity.
Some penalties cannot be determined one way or the other, even with instant replay.
Oh, and some of the players can really grate, I blame this on public schools PC-self-esteem bull-crap.
PC NFL, PC crap programming, and all the Leftist codswallop they put on the air.
Prominent Americans in TV management and programming may pay lip service to PC, but privately everyone knows it’s all horse sh*t - except for the drips in TV management and programming, who don’t seem to know a d*mned thing.
Starts at Easter and ends on the 4th of July!!!!
Yeah, but Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred seems destined to pull a Goodell and ruin a good thing.
He plans to meet with the Cleveland Indians after the Series and “get their minds right” about the name and logo.
