How would an iPhone with half the battery of competing smartphones ever have won the test, and why didnt Which test a similar device?
Which? is getting lots of attention today on strength of its report that claims smaller batteries dont last as long as larger batteries. Thats the only logical discovery the organization made in a flawed-by-design smartphone battery life test thats being widely reported.
What the reports headline doesnt make clear is that the iPhone 7 in the test has a 4.7-inch display, while all three of the other smartphone models tested are larger (5.1-inches, or more), and equipped with larger batteries. The iPhone could never have won this unequal comparison.
In other words, the larger the battery the longer the battery life. Which? even admits this, saying, it should hardly be surprising that one battery nearly half the size of another offers roughly half as much charge.
Its easy to imagine the test was set up precisely to deliver the conclusion the magazine chose to run as its headline. After all, if Which had really wanted to run a truly comparative test, it would have tested the larger alternatives against iPhone 7 Plus, a 5.5-inch display device with a Li-Ion 2900 mAh battery. Thats a fair test.
The test it ran is an unfair test, a perfect example of selective testing
Accepting Which? chose not to review a comparative device in a comparative review, then how can it possibly justify a conclusion that could never have gone in Apples direction?
Im declaring the report to be yet more of the FUD and nonsense that passes for Apple coverage these days. Cheap and tawdry sensationalist clicktivism from an organization I expect much more from. In my opinion, at its best the test is flawed, at worst, unethical.
No link provided as none is deserved.
The smaller battery helped them reach their price point. That’s what Apple engineering is all about now.

i would buy more iphones but the battery life is TERRIBLE and you have to carry spare batteries and cords with you .. where-ever you go.... as you can leave with 100 percent battery rating and an hour later it can be down to 19 percent
That’s not my experience. And how to you change the battery on an iPhone?
How do you change...
you dont change the battery on an iphone, you plug in a spare battery you have to carry for when the phone goes dead on you
No, you don't know what you are talking about, as usual. Do some math. If you add the increased dimensions to accommodate a 5.1" diagonal screen, keeping the same depths of each model, you wind up with approximately 11% more volume for a battery inside. If the battery originally took up only 10% of the original space, then you can easily fit a battery that is twice as big inside a phone that has a screen that is only 0.4" larger on diagonal dimension. THAT is engineering.
This is a crybaby report from a loser who wants to redirect blame to an imaginary boogie man.
“Our battery is undersized and that’s why we don’t last as long so you shouldn’t blame us because we don’t last as long.”
Hmmm... Never heard of it and have no need. Car charger takes does the trick toward the end of the day if the need arises.
yes, we have car chargers too
Apple tests the phones and says they are working FINE
but
the batteries still go down down down fast fast fast
we will buy more apple products when they fix their battery problem!
(we have done all the adjustments or resettings we could as apple suggested, didnt help much, the apple batteries are serious problems and there are countless website complaints about them too , so its not just something I am doing
All phones are close to the same dimension, aren’t they?
Why should Apple get special dispensation because - in the same basic form factor - they can only fit a smaller screen and a smaller battery?
Maybe this will help you with battery life.

Carry “spare batteries” for iPhones? Are you on drugs? Or perhaps confusing flashlights with cell phones?
They make battery packs for iPhones. I have one.
The phones are whatever dimensions they choos to make them. Thicker is an option.
The original iPhone battery life was pretty good.
The current phones life sucks !
Apple needs to put bigger batteries in their phones.
Abackupbattery is necessary for iPhone
19 percent in one hour? You are doing something grossly wrong.
I have had my iPhone 6 Plus for over two years, and with lots of use during the day it will be near dead by the time I leave the office, but its still plenty alive. A battery replacement is needed in the somewhat near future, but it works just fine. The only reason you could have such poor battery performance is because you must have cellular data turned on for everything and have never closed any apps or restarted your phone. Always keep your phone plugged in when possible and you’re battery will last much longer than you ever thought it could.

Engineered exclusively for iPhone 7, the Smart Battery Case gives you even longer battery life while offering great protection. Inside, a soft microfiber lining helps protect your iPhone. And on the outside, the silky, soft-touch finish of the silicone exterior feels great in your hand. A soft elastomer hinge design makes it easy to put the case on and take it off.
Charge your iPhone and battery case simultaneously for increased talk time up to 26 hours, Internet use up to 22 hours on LTE, and even longer audio and video playback.* With the Smart Battery Case on, the intelligent battery status is displayed on the iPhone Lock screen and in Notification Center, so you know exactly how much charge you have left.
This case supports Lightning accessories, such as the Lightning to USB Cable (included with your iPhone), and works with the iPhone Lightning Dock (sold separately).
Thanks. Wev e spent many days with Apple tech people and have closed unneeded apps and turned lighting down and about twenty more steps. They keep saying the batteries test good and we keep having to carry backups.
