Breaking News.
(Excerpt) Read more at foxnews.com ...
Arnie is why I began playing golf.
Loved his attack style and even more his grace & class.
Arnie inspired me.
Arnie was my adult hero.
This is truly sad. RIP, Arnie.
Didn’t realize he was that old. RIP Mr. Palmer.
Arnies Army will live forever. RIP Mr. Palmer. Best ever.
“..What a great man and a great golfer...”
He was also a fine pilot.
What is the criteria for Breaking News? Seems this Icon would be worthy?
You’re a jerk. Show some class.
I spent a week with Arnold at the Bay Hill Golf Course near Orlando, FL many years ago, fortunately I have a pic shaking hands with him,(for what its worth) Hard to believe he is now gone, he and I were just 1 year apart in age.
Rest in Peace Arnold.
Jack Nicklaus on Twitter:
I just got the news at about 8:45 that Arnold had passed. I was shocked to hear that we lost a great friendand that golf lost a great friend.
At this point I dont know what happened, and I suppose it is not important what happened. What is important is that we just lost one of the incredible people in the game of golf and in all of sports. My friendmany peoples friendjust wore out. I know he was in Pittsburgh trying to find out how to make himself better. Thats what Arnold has always tried to do. He has always been a fighter and he never gave up on anything. He didnt give up even now. Maybe his body did, but I know Arnolds will and spirit did not.
I wish I had another chance to talk to him, but I am so glad we talked a couple weeks ago on his birthday (Sept. 10), when he sounded great. So Barbara and I are just in shock and incredibly saddened. Our hearts, thoughts, prayers and sympathies go out to Kit, his kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and his entire loving family.
He was one of my best friends, closest friends, and he was for a long, long time. I will miss him greatly.
Arnold transcended the game of golf. He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He took the game from one level to a higher level, virtually by himself. Along the way, he had millions of adoring fansBarbara and I among them. We were great competitors, who loved competing against each other, but we were always great friends along the way. Arnold always had my back, and I had his. We were always there for each other. That never changed.
He was the king of our sport and always will be.
Kind of ironic he died on the last day of the 2015-16 season.
...
I got this from another article. They played at East Lake today, and start the Ryder Cup next week:
19. His can-do attitude. The last to serve as a Ryder Cup playing captain, Palmer won four points while captaining Team USA to victory at East Lake in 1963.
He knew who he was an why
I’ll pour out a Rolling Rock for him (no ingredients for an Arnold Palmer).
When you think of Palmer, you think, that’s an American, like John Wayne, or Ronald Reagan....iconic. RIP.
I too was at Bay Hill when he was in town in fact his condo was directly above. He was super nice to a 5 year old ... not knowing who he was, wandering into his garage (workshop). Knocked on the door one evening to see if a 5 year old wanted to go along to walk his dog. Off they went.
What a crappy day for the sports world. Memory eternal.
Arnie made professional golf and he started millions golfing. He was its foundation and beginning.I remember when jack began to challenge him, we sere so pissed at Jack. But it was Jack’s time but no one will argue that Palmer did not explode not only pro golf but he got millions to try the Sport. He was Golf.I went to the Open in ‘67. I went over and sat down near the putting green to watch them warm up.I was 6 feet from some guy putting 8 footers . It was him. It took my breath away. We he walked off, I walked behind him and followed him all 18.He played with Doug Sanders. I am so glad I did. Thanks Arnie.
Beautiful.
Don’t play or watch, but anytime someone mentioned professional golf he is the one who came to mind.
Rest in Peace
So many of us did watch Arnold Palmer when we were kids. My mother adored him and watched golf on our black and white television every Sunday.
Good man, great memories.
