It was 50 years ago, on 5 September 1966, that the cameras rolled for the first time in the Italianate village of Portmeirion as filming got under way for the cult 1960s adventure TV show The Prisoner.
The programme starred actor Patrick McGoohan playing the part of Number Six who is held captive in a mysterious village where the residents are known only by a number.

Absolute top fav! Who IS Number One?
The Show Opening is the best ever. And the theme music IMHO is one of the best scores for a TV show ever done.
Concur. A must.
Then roll into Secret Agent Man episodes in brilliant black and white.
This was a great show! Who was number 1?
Truly best series ever. I’ve visited the Village/Portmeirion twice, staying there once. There were NO lights at night, and I walked through the deserted village in the dark down the path from one of the iconic buildings where my room was to the sole phone booth — long before cell phones. Never will forget it.
Remember when he supposedly was able to get out but then heard a bell chime and realized he was still in the same time zone. What a good series.
As I watched the first episode on the hotel television set, I became totally hooked. My first question was "what is this, some Massachusetts thing?" My second question was "what if they don't have this on TV back home."
But they did. When we got home I was able to watch again and again, all summer long.
For many years, the spinning geometric I-T-C logo that preceded each episode gave me a thrill whenever I happened to see it, even though it never again foretold a reappearance of that remarkable television series.
No! “The Saint,” with the young Roger Moore! Followed by the “Man from U.N.C.L.E” series! Just have plenty of booze, because they are funnier that way!
He “got out” at the end of every episode.
The final episode literally made no sense. Actually, the entire show!
All I know is, if Trump doesn’t win, we’ll all have to answer to a big, fat number two!
The whole thing seemed like a big LSD trip.
In the 90s my philosophy professor borrowed my vhs tape of “The Prisoner” with Harlan Ellison’s commentary. I received it back with it taped over with “Faulty Tower” episodes. Both made me love UK tv when it was decent.
>>Best. Series. Ever.<<
Agreed.
LOL—Just try to get Illinois BDR 529 (Blues Brothers). Won’t happen. I might try, now that I’m in Michigan—fat chance.
Now we’re all The Prisoner.
“YOU are, Number 6.”
