Full Title: No love for the Obamas! Movie of Michelle and Barack's first date 'Southside With You' lags at the box office in its opening weekend
American audiences failed to fall in love with Southside With You over the weekend, with the film that tells the story about President Obama's first date with future First Lady Michelle under-performing at the box office.
The movie, which opened in limited release at 813 theaters across the country on Friday, only managed to pull in $3 million in its first three days, slightly below expectations for the picture.
This despite solid reviews across the board and a heavy press push, with stars Parkers Sawyer and Tika Sumpter and executive producer John Legend doing a number of interviews leading up to the film's release.

No light sabers? Bummer.
As part of the docu-drama, will they show the video clip of Michelle/Michael with swinging trouser meat during the visit on the Ellen Degeneres Show?
No big splosions. Didn’t watch
2 hour movie on their first date? Seriously? What did Rotton Tomatoes give it?
I wouldn’t go to see that ridiculous movie at the point of a bayonet.
Figure 40% (or more) of the country won't go see it because they can't stand the sight of the Obamas.
Half of those that are left are males, and who likely wouldn't get caught dead at a chick flick like this.
And a sizeable percentage of the bit that's left over either don't go to movies, or it's not playing around them, or don't like romantic comedies, or are on summer vacation, or whatever.
That leaves a pretty tiny demographic to draw from. More-or-less only single liberal women and gay men, aged 18-54.
Oh, and journalists.
Thank you for posting this!
“I wouldnt go to see that ridiculous movie at the point of a bayonet.”
I wouldn’t go see a movie about ANYONE’S first date at the point of a bayonet.
.
A bit of arithmetic here:
$3,000,000 / 3 days / 813 screens = $1230/day/screen
At $8 per ticket that is 153 tickets per day per screen. It cost $1.5M to make. Not too shabby, but certainly not very successful.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 92% rating which is glowing.
Finally a horror movie whites can yell at the screen over.
Who but a True Believer would even be interested in watching such tripe?
Even if it is well done and the story is embellished to the point of being on the level of those Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan movies, it’s just inappropriate subject matter. Making movies about such people after they die is fine. But while they are alive? That borders on worship. I have a severe problem with that. It’s creepy. It would have been creepy if they had done it about the Reagans.
Being stabbed to death, or watching a 2-hour paean to BO?
Hmmmm. What to do, what to do? ....
You're right, that's a hard one.
You know, I posted this the other day. You see, I thought it was funny that North Koreans would choose to watch endless loops of their Dear Leader on the TV. Then, this movie came out ....
Who would dare give it a bad review? No one wants to get disinvited from the oh so fab cocktail parties on the D.C. circuit.
The daughter of one of my fellow dialysis patients was at my clinic this morning trying to talk the black patients into going to see this movie this weekend, with a special admission price of $5.
NONE of the patients were interested.
93% rotten tomatoes? ?
They already made this movie, isn’t it called the crying game...just curious, is this one somehow different.
It’s glowing with something. Like it’s radioactively bad.
Would be the same as the daughter of one of your dialysis patients?
