Being a groundskeeper in a garden of a historic castle doesnt typically fall under the worlds most dangerous jobs category except when it comes to Englands Alnwick Castle.
The countrys least populated county is home to a collection of some of the worlds most deadly greenery. The property hosts a garden dedicated solely to plants with the power to kill you in a matter of minutes.
According to the Alnwick Castle website, the garden was founded in 2005 by the Duchess of Northumberland with the mission of bringing awareness to the lethal dangers of harmful and illegal drugs. The intoxicating and poisonous plants range from hemlock, to belladonna, to the opium poppy Papaver somniferum.
Great Big Story recently went behind the iron gates and featured a video tour of the garden by a groundskeeper. When asked if he finds the garden fascinating, he replied, half jokingly, Definitely
its a good way to get rid of your life.

There’s a cafe near here called the Belladonna Cafe..........I hardly ever see anybody eat there...............
Do they have screaming mandrakes?
Hmmmm, wonder why the are the least populated?
Years ago, back in the 1980s during the “generic” food craze, I found a bottle of cough syrup for kids at the local grocery store. It’s only active ingredient was “Extract of Belladonna”. I did not buy it.
Feeeed meeeeee!
Well, that would stop a cough.................and a heartbeat..............
Sure, and triffids, too.
Belladonna actually does have medicinal properties. Obviously, you want to be VERY careful with the dosage!
Everything on planet earth can kill you if you take enough of it.
And most things are beneficial in the right dose.
Which is why this "deadliest garden" is as much a joke as "deadliest drug store".
They misquoted him -- he said, "It's a good way to get rid of your wife."
Wasn’t it Belladonna that, in medieval times, was used in women’s eyes to dilate their pupils and make them look more attractive?
I think so. Belladonna also known as Deadly Nightshade.
Fugu is better.
Yep. Try a teeny tiny itty bitty piece of Fugu. You’ll (NOT) like it.
My only regret from the “Generic Age” is not buying a six pack of B-E-E-R brand beer and saving it. You would never want to drink it!
I have no idea why the Japanese are so crazy over it.
If you are referring to Tetrodotoxin rather then the fish then it is has been been used as a pain reliever for migraines and is being researched as a pain reliever for cancer patients.
Do the plants keep away the zombies?
