The price tag of one Texas school districts high school football stadium and events center just ballooned to $70 million, making it, reportedly, the most expensive high school football complex in the United States.

There is no excuse for this kind of excess.
I find it ridiculous. But if the voters approved it then that’s on them.
Make only the voters who approved it pay for it.
To be named “Hayden Fry Stadium” ?
It’s gonna be a 12,000 seat stadium. It’s about 5 miles away from Allen’s new stadium that holds 18,000. Big is in in Tejas.
Was it built by slaves? Our White House was . . . Moochie said so!
The District operates 20 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, four alternative schools, and one early childhood education center.
But it is STILL excessive. Since when did public colleges and high schools assume the responsibility of providing farm teams for the NFL?
HS Stadium!!!
Wow!!! I wold have guessed a mil or two to build one.
But what do i know :)
Apparently since they discovered there’s big money in doing so.
Allen?
I actually believed this article was about the Katy High School stadium with 12000 seats and a jumbotron that was just started outside west Houston.
Does Gilley’s get the snack shack concession?
High school football is a big deal in Texas. Used to be in small town Ohio, too, may be still. I remember Massillon, OH had a huge one decades ago.
“Then, McKinney voters approved the stadium as part of a larger $220 million bond package, but it did not include everything.”
Stupid Democratic politicians, stupid liberal voters.
As long as no Federal dollars are going to pay for construction or maintenance or anything else .... then its up to local taxpayers (or chump State taxpayers) to pay for it. If that is how they want to spend their money, that’s their business.
Non-student tickets in the area are something like $8 at the venue.
If half the stadium is filled by parents and other adults that’s $48K ... students adding maybe a quarter of that, so guesstimate $60k sales (not including concessions or parking) for any football game. Track and field or soccer will bring in considerably less. Still, with parking and concessions a venue like this could easily bring in a half million a year. So at least it pays for its upkeep.
As a business model goes it’s pretty darn weak ... though not as offensive as the stadiums that billionaires and the pros demand these days.
Aside: for the price of one Cowboys ticket I could watch a whole season of high school football AND eat snacks ... frankly, I think we should just cut the pros loose and concentrate on high school and college sports anyway....
I live in Allen, 5 miles south of where McKinney is building this complex. I am kind of surprised that they are only getting 12,000 sets for their 70 mil — we got 18,000 seats for 60 mil.
You can call it excess, but consider the following:
> The district no longer has to pay the University of North Texas in Denton (an hour drive away) $100k a year to hold its commencement ceremony in an inconvenient location.
> Tickets for Allen Eagle Football games (four time State Champions) range from $10 - 25$ each (with a thriving resale market) and the place is PACKED on game nights.
> The stadium is also rented out to other events, which produces more revenue for the Allen ISD.
> The price tag for the facility also included rehearsal areas for the MASSIVE band and cheer team (The Allen Escadrille is a regular performer at the Tournament of Roses parade) and other performing arts taught at the school.
All in all, a decent deal for an ISD that has an enrollment of 6 to 8 thousand students at the one high school in the district and is located in one of the more affluent cities of one of the most affluent counties in the country. I am wondering what West Plano High School will come up with in another few years — there is some SERIOUS money in West Plano.
LOL — I have an aluminum cast donkey in my foyer and joke to people that I own probably the only democrat in Collin County, Texas.
According to our new overloads/refugees all tax payers are their slaves.
