Thinking of retiring to western N.C. I'd love a log cabin in the mountains with modern amenities, but don't want to be too far from Dr's, grocery shopping, hospitals, etc., so a good mtn view would suffice. I've been looking north, west & east of Asheville and also in the Lenoir area and further south of Lenoir.
I'm watching the weather, and reading N.C newspapers and it seems like flooding can be a real problem.
Any suggestions/warnings from North Carolinians, especially regarding areas to avoid, would be helpful.
Thanks
#12 also do not canoe down the river as the locals may start hunting you.....
If you settle”down the mountain” in Old Fort or points east, it gets VERY warm in the summer. I grew up in the Midwest, moved to the Asheville area in’79. Would never go back. As for the”weirdos”, etc, the normal folks who live here just go our way and ignore them. There are LOTS of normal folks. Wonderful people!
” in Old Fort or points east, it gets VERY warm in the summer”
Thanks for the warning.
; )
The only place there to live is Waynsville. They have moved forward in the last 10 years, awesome place. Don’t move to Murphy the corruption is out of control, I will give it to the new Sheriff, he is doing a fine job, but he is sick of the 1930s politics.
Spent several months in Hamptonville area. Great food, great people, prices were good. Not far from Winston-Salem, so lots close by, should you need it.
Seemed like drugs were moving in quick. Good ole boys selling drugs instead of shine, was a little disappointing. Still plenty of good people clinging to guns and religion.
One more thing no even good hospitals, you get helicopter out for everything at the tune of 40,000 a ride, that is why we left.
I don’t know if you are discouraging this freeper or not but my opinion you are stating the gospel truth.
Waynesville elevation looks pretty good for keeping the hot summer temps down. I don’t mind some cold or a little snow - rather have it cold than hot - don’t care for ice though.
The pictures of it online look really nice.
Looks like you wouldn’t be far from Asheville Regional Airport, so that’s good
I lived there then it was a lots more than 50 FBI and every bounty hunter in the county. He was on the run for 5 years. The cop that caught him was not old enough to carry a gun by law. He was tried and wanted it over other cops had given him rides and had no idea who he was. When the officer caught him Eric went in with no problems, while sitting in the booking room someone said that is Eric!
No I didn’t know him but we went to the same local stores, and some of those officers want the same fame and think everyone is a criminal. New Sheriff and it got better but we needed to be closer to doctors.
It is a really nice place. We stayed there before we left. Good food and great little down town atmosphere and nice people.
Some snow but you can enjoy it.
One more thing don’t go in lakes or rivers in Murphy, I have seen and know there is septic lines going in all.
People are retiring to sections of Maine in droves.
No, Robbinsville is the absolute worst! Highest violent crime rate and infant mortality in NC.
Really... I assumed by the demographics that it was safer than what you are suggesting.
Meth and H problems up there?
Be aware that the vacation rental areas have a big burglary problem. Most locals are poor, often turning to meth for relief. Stealing feeds that habit. I’ll bet there isn’t a derelict trailer for 100 miles that doesn’t have a big flat screen TV; stolen. Most good people are in church on Sunday.
A 4 wheel drive vehicle is required to drive the rural roads that are hilly & very curvy in the winter snow. Very dangerous. In considering buying a house or land, be aware how easy it is to get to & from. Being snowed in is a real possibility.
Just like everywhere else, the power goes off. Not on beautiful, sunny days but rather on freezing, snowy nights. Always have a second source of heat, wood or gas, from that cozy electric heater.
Ha!
I live in Lenoir, come on down, or over or whatever...
Didn’t look through the entire thread to see if you’ve chimed in.
Or want to.
