Thinking of retiring to western N.C. I'd love a log cabin in the mountains with modern amenities, but don't want to be too far from Dr's, grocery shopping, hospitals, etc., so a good mtn view would suffice. I've been looking north, west & east of Asheville and also in the Lenoir area and further south of Lenoir.
I'm watching the weather, and reading N.C newspapers and it seems like flooding can be a real problem.
Any suggestions/warnings from North Carolinians, especially regarding areas to avoid, would be helpful.
Thanks
Asheville is liberal & expensive - South toward Highland is very nice but pricey. Still there are out of they way places that can’t cost too much. Maggie Valley might be nice.
Lol.
I like Old Fort & Marion too
Some of my mom’s family lives around there. Nice area.
Look around West Jefferson, NC...It’s close to Boone and the amenities...It has conveniences and is not a “tourist town”...
My best friend lives in Black Mountain. He bought his house maybe 40 years ago. He loves it there but he told me that if he had to purchase a house now, he could not afford it. He is not poor either.
We talk maybe 3 times a week and he is usually sitting on his porch while we converse. I have noticed that he is regularly interrupted by neighbors walking by, etc. A friendly place.
I hadn’t considered TN, but I’ll check out eastern TN
Thanks
One thing you will hear about NC is “Murphy to Manteo”.
It refers to the width of the state. It is all you can do to drive from the western most spot to the eastern most spot in one day. And if you consider Ocracoke as the eastern most spot, you have to take a boat for the last 2 miles!
That is indeed a nice area.
Western NC (and associated parts of TN) is my 2nd favorite part of the US. I love the geography, and there is plenty going on no matter what sort of person you are.
What makes it 2nd best for me is the hot summers.
I have, though online only, it’s a possibility too
Black Mountain is nearly a suburb of Asheville. Plenty of good medical help within 30 minutes.
I don’t mind cold & a little snow...in fact I prefer it over hot. That’s a big reason I was looking in the west/mountain areas - to get away from the heat.
I have a lot of family in Yadkin County and the land is not too expensive there as compared to Asheville. It however is not mountainous but rolling. I have close family in Morganton about(15-20 miles) from Lenoir. It is a fine community and has everything you need. Hickory not far away has a large and excellent hospital and Morganton has a fine hospital.10 miles from Morganton you have excellent mountains and trout fishing. heheh My standard for NC mountains.
I saw near South Mountain 10 acres on a paved road for about 5000 per acre. Not cheap but the NC mountains are now filled with Floridians.Marion is a nice town with a Walmart and a small hospital and a great Bbq place that is cheap. Wilkes County is another area and you can check. it had some amazing companies that started there such as Lowes and Holly Farms. It is also the home of Moonshine and Nascar and the legendary driver Jr. Johnson. Also the legendary character Tom Dula (aka Tom Dooley)was from Wilkes County..
I love those mountains What am I doing by not living in the NC mountains ???
Oops forgot. Check out Brevard south of Asheville. Good town and close to Greenville as well as Asheville. It also has The Davidson River a top level trout habitat.
Best wishes my friend...
Thanks. I guess I thought Boone was a little far from things.
Ironic given that Appalachian area in particular was union sympathizer turf mostly though there were rebels too
Difference between south and north is nearly all white southerners are from stock that fought and most of it was fought here
We see it everyday if you live where I do...middle TN
MOST NORTHERNERS HAVE NO CONNECTION TO IT NOW BEYOND AN OPINION
freepers howl that their ancestor was true blue and bled red but stats wise most non southern stock is heavily post civil war immigration
Whereas I have zero post civil war origin blood
It’s not that we are refighting the war but rather we respect and honour from whence we came
And we’ve usually been far more cohesive than Yankees
Look how southern whites vote even now....80-90% GOP....another irony
And one final one.....I’ve notice four current or former Yankee areas and one where the confederate battle flag flies heavily
The UP OF MITCH
Flathead lake area of Montana
Rural Indiana
And the unionist areas of southern Appalachia
And lastly.....Asheville is overrun with Yankees...as is any other lib southern area
Why does no one retire to Yankee areas?
Btw....I’m driving to extreme northern union territory today
11 hours
The tip of the ring finger
Check out Marietta, SC. It’s near Jones Gap and very pretty. Not too far from Asheville and Greenville giving you the best of both worlds.
Thanks for all the info!
“we moved from Western suburbs of Chicago to WNC 10 years ago and would not even DREAM of going back.....”
Lol, almost nobody would!
There is a bunch going on in Boone. Western Carolina University is there
