The edge of the universe is closer than we thought...320 million light years smaller
Daily Mail ^ | Aug. 17, 2016 | Abigail Beall

If the universe was infinitely old, as we used to assume, then it must be filled with an infinite number of stars and galaxies.

So why is the night sky not completely lit up by the light from these stars?

This question was first asked by the nineteenth century astronomer Heinrich Olbers, and the answer is, because of the age of the universe, not all of the photons have had enough time to reach us yet.

The amount of universe we are able to see is called the observable universe, and according to a pair of astrophysicists, it just got 320 million light years smaller.

The fact that, according to Einstein the speed of light is the same from any frame of reference. Where one goes from there is sort of up to you, I guess but the old “man at the station vs. the man on the train” ain’t helpful.

That WE may not be at the center.

Here is the problem. If the Big Bang is true, matter began moving outward at some velocity less than speed of light. Any light generated in the time frame close to the event would begin accelerating in all directions at the speed of light into regions of the universe devoid of observers. Hence , there are no observable, “original” photons”. In fact, when you think about it, there was no matter for these photons to interact with and create 2nd generation photons either. So the “background” 5 Hz radiation has to be at least 3rd or 4th generation photons.

Doesn’t matter, if we go one way and the other guy goes the other way, total speed is still not more than only 1 speed of light. I think.

Think of an ant crawling on the surface of an expanding balloon, wondering what’s on the other side of the “end”.

Good old Asimov. I just retired and am going to revisit all the old classics.

I have ROKU and have been trying to find good Syfi movies. Amazing how few original themes out there.

I have always asked, what exactly is the universe expanding into? If you approach the very edge of the universe, and look across, what would you see? I asked a professor that once, and he snickered.

Don't confuse the size of the universe with the size of the observable universe.
There is no actual edge, we just can't see any further than that. Yet.
Similar to the horizon on earth, you can't see the sea further away but if you go there (and on earth it's possible) it does not look much different than where you were.
If you managed to travel in an instant to what you think is the end of the universe, you will find billions of years have passed at the spot you observed, expansion has taken place and the overall view of the universe from there will be pretty much the same as from home.
The Universe has no center. Earth is only where our viewpoint is. It's not special.

Jita is crowded & laggy, so don’t go there.

I have always asked, what exactly is the universe expanding into? ...

The idea is that the space is created as the universe expands.
There was literally nothing there before.
We humans have a hard time picturing that. Our minds insist there must be some kind of empty void out there already, but where would *that* have come from?

Is the restaurant still there?
Yes, Milliways is still there. But have you tried booking a table recently? You have to book so far ahead it's unreal.
