A collective of colleges in Los Angeles suburb has been in an uproar for the past week over Facebook posts from students with one request for housing: No white roommates.
A Facebook post from Karé Ureña, a junior at Pitzer College at the Claremont Colleges, asked for fellow students to join an off-campus house for the upcoming school year.
POC only, she wrote, using the abbreviation for people of color.
Ureña, who is black, added, I dont want to live with any white folks.
The post, first reported by the Claremont Independent student magazine, sparked outrage from the campus and denouncements from school administration.
Other Pitzer students pushed back on the request, setting off a fierce debate on a private Facebook page.
POC only? Maybe Im missing something or misunderstanding your post, but how is that not a racist thing to say? Pitzer student Dalia Zada wrote, according to the Independent.
Another student wrote housing segregation is illegal.
Pitzer student Terriyonna Smith later wrote back: White people always mad when they dont feel included but at the end of the day yall are damaging asf (as f---) and if a POC feels they need to protect themselves from that toxic environment THEY CAN! Quick to try to jump on a POC but you wont call your friends out when theyre being racist asf...Im not responding to NO comments and NOPE I dont wanna have a dialogue.
Pitzer President Melvin Oliver who last year became the colleges first African-American president said the roomie request was inconsistent with our Mission and values.
This is but another example to us that social media is not an effective platform to engage in complex dialog on seemingly intractable critical issues that have varied histories and contested understandings, he wrote in a message sent to the campus community.
They create more heat than light and invite extreme viewpoints that intentionally obfuscate the nuanced context that surrounds these issues.
Ureña and her roommate, Pomona College student Sajo Jefferson, defended their request in a statement to The Washington Post, which said minority students feel ostracized on campus.
When and if you understand this context, it becomes clear that students of color seeking a living space that is all-POC is not only reasonable, but can be necessary, the statement said.
We live in a world where the living circumstances of POC are grounded in racist social structures that we can not opt out of. These conditions threaten the minds, bodies and souls of people of color both within and without the realms of higher education. We are fighting to exist.
Ureña said her friends have since found their roommate, and she has deleted the post.
Pitzer is part of Claremont Colleges, a group of small liberal arts schools in Claremont, Califorinia, that also comprises Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College and Pomona College, as well as Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences.
According to school data, 48% of Pitzers 1,067 undergraduates are white; only 5% are African American.
Classes at Pitzer are scheduled to start Aug. 30.
Black is not a color, her name sounds funny...
Racist.
But...But...everyone, especially BLM, tells me only whites are racists.
Racists.
Ureña is setting up a private house off campus and the house has nothing to do with the university, except that some, if not all residents will be students.
Being that it is not university housing for a public university, it is no one else’s business except four the house’s owner and its residents.
wonder what Karé Ureña’s take would be if her landlord decided to lease to whites only.
According to school data, 48% of Pitzers 1,067 undergraduates are white; only 5% are African American.
Makes one wonder why she picked one of the Claremont Colleges other than to make a point and be a general pain the the a$$.
If I had been going to school there, I would have immediately submitted an ad for a White roommate only.
My daughter had a black roommate in college.
Never picked up after herself, had others over all the time trashing the place and eating all of what little food was in the apartment, never studied, and was a major pain in the @ss the entire time she was there.
My daughter and one of the other girls finally just moved out and went to another facility.

Is there a “POC” only section at the student union building ?
The fact is: Every issue the social justice warriors highlight will never be resolved. It is a perpetual pity party full of whiners, losers and haters. It is a blantant and brutish power grab.
Social Justice Warriors are self anointed vigilantes seeking vengeance. Their only solution to elevating themselves is stepping on someone else. They are vile, dangerous stupid people. Bark O-Bung-Hole is their leader, the COOTUS. (Community Organizer of the United States.)
Wonder how long they will keep the “POC” acronym when they realize it also stands for “piece of c**p”.
Look what 60 years of forced desegregation hath wrought.
Segregation-in-reverse.
The irony is that ‘they’ are the ones who wanted school segregation over a century ago. Then, the kindly Liberals a half-century later insisted they should desegregate.

Given enough time, history tends to repeat itself.
Some unmarried mom thought ‘Urina’ sounded like a lovely name for a girl. She had already chose the name Def’Icatto for her firstborn, a son. It sounded ‘Italian’ so she thought. The Nurse could not bring herself to put that spelling (Urina) on the birth certificate, so she changed it to Urena. “Mom” was furious, but got over it.//
Yeah, like that would break my heart.
“My daughter had a black roommate in college.”
“Never picked up after herself, had others over all the time trashing the place and eating all of what little food was in the apartment, never studied, and was a major pain in the @ss the entire time she was there.”
I had a white roommate in college who became addicted to drugs, stole cash and valuables from me and the other roommates, eat our food, trashed the house, made extreme messes in the house and at times became violent.
But for some reason, perhaps it was because how we were raised, or maybe due to the education we received, none of us attributed his behavior to his being white.
This girl is in for a rude awakening...
She will be hired by a company that have employees of all colors and she will have to work with them daily and closely...
40 hours a week of micro aggression and dog whistles...
I doubt she will survive all that racism...
Blacks should be encouraged to seek and obtain non-white room mates. If segregation becomes, per their wishes, widespread whites will only benefit. Blacks are a drag upon our society; i.e. wasting money by spending it upon “black studies,” “Ghetto Life,” “The Black experience,” and such twaddle. Such a drag would be lifted freeing our people to learn.
