To boldly go . . . back to 1995!
Wednesday at a Television Critics Association panel in Beverly Hills, Calif., Bryan Fuller, executive producer of Star Trek: Discovery (premiering in January on CBS, then airing on CBS All Access), revealed that a woman will be the new shows main character.
But this isnt the typical self-righteous Hollywood back-slappery that launched a thousand Medium.com essays. Nor is it the Girl Power! casting of summers Ghostbusters flop, nor the newly announced all-female Oceans Eight caper. Star Trek has always done diversity the right way.

The best captain, of course, is Captain Kirk.
I'm looking forward to the new series.
I hope she doesn’t get lost in the first ten minutes of the show.
One of my all-time favorite lines is from Janeway: “I hate anomalies. they give me a headache.”
I could get behind a new woman Star Trek Capt....
Er...uh... forget I said that.
I liked Janeway as well. I think Picard was the best, imo.
It doesn’t matter man or woman but how they read the opening.
The biggest problem with Voyager was Star Trek fatigue on the part of the public and on the part of the script writers.
Captain Janeway was not any sort of problem. If anything, she was one of the highlights of the show.
Every star trek since the original is crap.
Janeway was a teenage boy’s caricature of being a harass, just like every feminist Hillary stand-in forever.
She was absurd.
BTW, do you remember Star Trek: Enterprise? It seems Captain Archer's dad wrote teh mission statement.
It lasted 7 years.
Picard was played by the finest actor of the bunch; Janeway’s chaneling of Kate Hepburn I rather did find appealing; but the BEST captain was (of course) Kirk.
The interaction between the original cast was unmatched by the later series.
One can never have enough Star Trek. The new Star Trek movie “reboots” have done a remarkably good job with the franchise, as have the actors who have done a really good job “chanelling” the original characters (Kirk and Dr McCoy in particular - I don’t think the new Spock does as well)...
In my opinion, the best Star Trek captain was the only one who didn't actually captain a ship, Benjamin Cisko. The others were adequate (yes, Kirk was, at best adequate, even though he set the archetype)...

I agree that Star Trek was the best, but something about people who kill their wives (ie: William Shatner) I find unappealing.
It’s a strange phobia, I know.
Never did like Janeway. No one beats Picard :)
Diversity is where nations go to die.
After all of these years and given the failing state in which we currently live... how am I supposed to give one single solitary rip?

Bingo! I never thought of that, but you’re right. Voyager was a good series. Interesting characters. Also liked the holographic Doctor as well as Seven of Nine.
I have to admit Janeway played a good Captain. But Picard was the best. No doubt.
If they wanted a female captain or commander, they should have gone with TPol.
