Two people have been killed and more remain missing after a large explosion ripped through an apartment building in a Maryland suburb of Washington.

At least 34 people, including three firefighters, have been injured. Residents are reported to have suffered burns from the blaze and fractures from jumping out of windows.

Montgomery County Police Assistant Chief Russ Hamill announced two people were killed in the blast in Silver Spring during a media conference on Thursday morning.

The explosion was also declared a 'mass casualty incident', and added the building is still in 'extremely dangerous condition'.

Journalists have no clue how to construct a sentence, and I see the comma shortage continues unabated.

"Let's eat grandma."
"Let's eat, grandma."

Commas save lives.

Except for the water heater and heater, which are both outside, our house is electric. We have a boat that had a propane stove and hubby said.....oh heck no! Replaced the stove with an electric cooktop and convection oven. If we’re out we use a marine bbq that’s fueled by the tiny propane tanks.
Just the other day my neighbor called me because she walked into daughters house and smelled a lot of gas. Apparently one of the babies turned the gas stove on full blast and the auto pilot didn’t light.
When I was little we used an old gas stove in the living room for heating. Think the only thing that saved us was you could see daylight around the doors and windows. Lol

Back in 1973, I worked as a maintenance guy at JC Penney when in college. My boss said to me, after I mentioned how an employee could easily steal stuff a certain way, finally said, “Why do you come up with so many ways to rip off the company.”

My response, “Maybe I should be in security.”

:-)

I actually did successfully steal something of significant value when I worked at Jafco back in the mid-1970’s. I took it back. I really learned a lot that day. Talk about conviction!

To this day what I learned is this: Whenever someone steals, the only REAL victim in the long run is the person who does the stealing. If you don’t repent, it changes you. and not in the good way, and not in a way that will improve your life. Quite the opposite.

And yes, that Jafco one was a quite convoluted scheme. It was sort of a “catch me if you can” (the movie) sort of thing.

Come to think of it, didn’t that guy start a security company?

Remember the Castleton codo that went boom because of the natural gas pipeline leak in the back yard? I am lucky the pipeline at the edge of my property is oil. A lot less risk. Still don’t like it though. When the city was using a back hoe back there I went and asked when they were expecting to be done. Left and didn’t come home till they were done. Tested the area they were working on a day later and then a week later and then a month later. They didnt breach anything. https://www.amazon.com/Macherey-Nagel-90760-Test-Paper-Strips/dp/B00S1UQ5MI

“With all the equipment and ability to edit, the constant spelling and grammatical errors by professionals shock me.”

Careful, there are people here who turn into werewolves at the mention of spelling, grammar, or punctuation.

“and I see the comma shortage continues unabated.”

I think the commas were traded for extra exclamation points.

That was back with IBM typewriters...”

Remember when they came out with the proportional spacing? What a riot. I do remember that the “i” took one space and I believe the “m” took three or four. My boss worked for Military Air Transport Service and wanted all the text on the left AND the right aligned so typed everything twice, once to note adjustments and the second time to incorporate them. And, of course, everything we did had at least 6 tissue copies which were made with carbon paper, plus one yellow tissue which was filed by subject and one pink tissue which was filed in date order in a read file.

Typing today is just a Sunday walk in the park by comparison.

True! We do have some grammar and spelling nazi’s here. But, I overlook errors here. We are not here professionally. Plus, I’d be a hypocrite since I have become a bit lazy on FR myself.

But, we’re talking about media. This is their job. There is a site that I go to for local news. I think most 10 year olds can put together a proper sentence better than the folks on that site. This is what they are supposed to do. So, I am not cutting them even a tiny break. ok, I had my tantrum!

My boss wouldn’t permit use of white out. Said ability to type things correctly the first time was totally a state of mind. I do remember using ditto masters. Could make a lot of corrections with a razor blade and scotch tape. LOL

The surprising thing about word processors, even the most primitive, is they were products that automatically sold themselves to anybody who’d gone through the primitive horrors of typewriters and carbon paper. How well I remember it all because I’m one of the relatively few members of the transitional generation that started out with the old typewriters and went into the fully computerized systems of today. I even still have the old Smith Corona electric portable typewriter I used in my second and third years of law school.

“We do have some grammar and spelling nazis here.”

In a perfect world, no one on my side of any issue would ever commit an error. Given the prevailing conditions, though, one must adopt your approach.

Still, it would be nice if one could help those who habitually make an error. Not for the purpose of self-aggrandizement or to diminish another, but to make their writing a little better. (Conversely, it might be fun to convince leftards of all sorts of silliness.)

Limbaugh habitually uses “as such” when he needs “that being the case.” I’m surprised that no one has told him. I’d certainly want to be corrected.

I think it is a mistake to condemn everyone who tries to help as a “grammar Nazi.” Imagine how much better our writing would be if we all helped each other.

Our group had a secretary once who used white out by the gallon. A typed page weighed about an ounce. She didn’t last long.
