Two people have been killed and more remain missing after a large explosion ripped through an apartment building in a Maryland suburb of Washington.
At least 34 people, including three firefighters, have been injured. Residents are reported to have suffered burns from the blaze and fractures from jumping out of windows.
Montgomery County Police Assistant Chief Russ Hamill announced two people were killed in the blast in Silver Spring during a media conference on Thursday morning.
The explosion was also declared a 'mass casualty incident', and added the building is still in 'extremely dangerous condition'.

Right? Sometimes I just want to send notes to these editors and say they wouldn’t have lasted a week in an office when I was a secretary. That was back with IBM typewriters and we got it right the first time because retyping that would be a pain. My bosses would have put me on probation and fired me next time around. With all the equipment and ability to edit, the constant spelling and grammatical errors by professionals shock me.
Muslim meth lab.
My gosh, when I was a kid I lived across the street from that apartment complex.
I used to live in Columbia, MD, north of there. My apartment building was set on fire by probable illegals using a barbecue grill on the balcony and hiding it, still burning, in the outdoors storage closet when they were done cooking.
Fortunately, I lived on the other end of the building and the fire and smoke damage was confined to the six units on the far end. Nobody injured beyond smoke inhalation.
A Howard County fire department Lt. told me that they cycled nearly the entire department thru the event for training purposes. Columbia is so new, nearly the entire place built since 1970, that they have few fires.
Any idea of what the demographics look like there now?
Holly B remember how copies were made with the copier paper in between each sheet.....white out....
OMG!
From local news videos most of the tenants are hispanic.
In one of the engineering disaster shows, there was a segment on a construction technique used for “housing projects” in 1960s(?) UK.
Basically, prefab concrete panels with integrated post-&-hole interlocks, where the weight of the ceiling panels locks the wall panels in place.
Fine and dandy, until a kitchen gas explosion in one corner apartment managed to lift the ceiling panels up enough to free the top posts of the two exterior wall panels, and allow the explosion to remove them from supporting the ceiling, and floors above.
Maybe some pancaking, but I remember more of a vertical fanning of the panels on that corner.
Remediation was the installation of angle brackets to help hold the newly identified critical panels together.
Article says people were complaining about smelling gas for a few weeks,so could be gas leak.
Then it looks like the “home meth lab” is more likely. Another possibility is trying to turn on the gas after service has been turned off (for non-payment of the bill).
I’ve driven past there so many times on the way home from WR.
I’m 73 and graduated from law school in 1967. Ah, how well do I remember all the slave typing and agonizing proof reading. I also remember carbon copies and the pure agony that correcting a typo in an original and four carbons involved. Computers have made it far easier to do it right and to do it wrong.
