Who do you think is historically our greatest actor and comedian?
Don Rickles should have shown up earlier in this thread.
He may not have been the best comedian ever, but he is the only comedian to have made me fall out of my chair because I was laughing so hard.
When I was a kid, Laurel & Hardy were my favorites. Abbott & Costello, too.
Have to give Buster Keaton props, his comedic stunts are amazing to this day.
Jackie Gleason’ Honeymooners established so many sitcom basics.
Carlin was rude and crude, but always laugh-out-loud funny
More recently, loved the Airplane! and Naked Gun movies.
MST3K reruns still make me laugh.
Of the more recent comedians, I like Brian Regan and Jim Gaffigan.
Yep
Red Skelton
Dean Martin and Don Rickles are tied for Second
Johnny Carson and Foster Brooks for Third (Johnny outside of the Tonight Show was Great)
For who I enjoy ...
Ron White
Robin Williams (who was actually a better actor than Comedian)
Groucho Marx (for quotes) and his Brothers when no one is looking.
Jeff Foxworthy
Then all you have left is the Dregs LARRY THE CABLE GUY!
(Women don’t get the 3 Stooges or Laurel and Hardy but my inner 13 year old still does.. they count.. but only in private)
I started reading the lists and totally agree with
Buddy Hackett and Tim Conway ... (had a Girlfriend that peed herself over the Elephant thing that Conway did ... good thing she was wearing black pants!)
Looking at that classic photo I am sadly reminded of how lothsom HOLLYWOOD and its fallen stars have become.
Hollywood was always a den of sin. It’s just more blatant now.
I been diggin on ol Red Foxx as Fred Sanford lately.
That show is hilarious. He’s an old black bigot but, it’s so funny, it’s from back when we could still laugh about such things.
You Are Sick (yeah that was funny)
FYI the meticulously, digitally remastered audio and video Blu-ray print of "Its a Mad - - - - World" is exquisite and a "must own" for fans of this delightful tour de force.
Agreed: W. C. Fields. You nailed it.
Plus the Marx Brothers.
"No missure my dog does not bite."
Cleauseau reaches down to pet the dog, which nearly bites his arm off: "Nize doggie".... ARRR, ARRR, ARRRF!
"MISSURE, I sought yu said yure dog DOES NOT BITE!"
"Zat missure iz NOT MY DOG!"
You are right, but at least the studios and actors used to try and put their best foot forward and hide that crap from their movie going audience. That is no longer the case.
**** “He was great. I once had a beer with him while sitting at a bar at Snowmass in Aspen. He was exactly the same in person as he was on screen” ****
Me and a few of my fellow Sailors had a few Beers with John Wayne and Flip Wilson ... there were non-stop jokes and they were laughing harder than any of us... and John Wayne did not have his Toupee... so much (most) of what Flip was doing was about his bald head, we were in tears laughing so hard. John Wayne was a pretty funny guy too, Flip Wilson was super quick and was doing different voices/personas ... at one point I thought John Wayne might actually break his beer bottle he was slamming the table so hard, he had tears rolling laughing so hard same as us.
One thing I learned about show biz that day is that they go 100 MPH Full Steam and even though it was only for about 15-20 Minutes ... while we Sailors drank maybe a Beer each... they did 10 X as much (I don’t remember what Flip was drinking, but it came in Pitchers)
They were Drunk and Gone... Off to the next Gig, they really slammed it down, like they had been on a Desert Island or something, they guzzled it down fast!
And i thought he was good in drama, Casino and was it Kelly’s heroes?
couple of points. I want to put Jerry Lewis into nomination. In the 50s and early 60s he was king. I do like the Marx brothers Fields and the others. Robin Williams more recently.
I think Jim Carey was the new Lewis. His work in The Mask was great. There were times I couldn’t tell whether he was doing his physical schtick or it was special effects. I know he imploded, but he’s a great physical comic.
I’d add best entertainer of the last century. Bob Hope, radio, movies, comedy, TV, the military, and sang and danced some. I don’t think anyone can touch him for all over entertainer.
"What's Up Doc?" ..."Love is never having to say you're sorry" ..."That's the STUPIDEST thing I ever heard of."
Jack Lemon, Tony Curtis & Marilyn Monroe, in: "Some Like it Hot".
Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon, Peter Falk & Natilie Wood in: "The Great Race". (Jack Lemon said this was the one film in his entire career that he loved the most... "Brandy, throw more brandy"... WHAP, he gets hit in the face with another pie: ... "Rum, blech... I never mix my drinks!")
Peter Falk & Allan Arkin: "The In-laws". ..."Serpentine Sheldon, SERPENTINE!"
IMDB says that he was in both. Unfortunately I didn't see either one.
It seems that comedians are often good in drama.
Tim Conway Jr is just so naturally funny on the radio. No one else like him. He is up for a Marconi this year.
Doesn't any one knock?
You can;t do this, I'm an American, I pay taxes! . . . Well I'm an American anyway!
