I've got an opossum who's hanging out in my ducts and walls. I was thinking of getting a trap and catching him (or her, I don't want little possums to raise!) and letting him out in a field far away from me.
Anyone have any experience with possums in the house?

Marsupial, because the females have POUCHES. The only Marsupial in North America I believe.

They ARE mammals. Marsupials are mammals, but not all mammals are marsupials.

We got a lot here. Just in case.. What herbs and spices do you use? I imagine sage and bay leaves would be good, maybe a little rosemary...

There are more than 60 different species of opossum, which are often called possums. The most notable is the Virginia opossum or common opossumthe only marsupial (pouched mammal) found in the United States and Canada.

Highly unlikely that the possum has rabies.

Call the professionals, even if you have to call one from a few counties away. They know how to remove them with the least amount of damage to your abode and keeping the critter(s) alive to be moved to a location for release. Win-win all the way around.

Nuke it from space. It’s the only way to be sure.

Stinky Mothballs in the entry ways? This is no good if you have to smell the mothballs though, because the gas is poison. I used it for bats and squirrels and it worked. Then I plugged the points of access.

Never heard of a rabid possum...their body temps are too low for the virus to survive.

I had a possum living in my bathroom for a while. I put down two bowls of water, and it used one for drinking and the other for its toilet. They're very easy to clean up after. It liked kitten chow, trail mix, and cereal.
They aren't actually much of a rabies risk, because their basal body temperature is so low it's not a good host for the virus. They aren't cuddly, of course, but they are rather cool. I'd set out a live trap, at night, full of trail mix.

Yes, they can be scary when teeth exposed in fight mode. Don't get close. Follow advice of Freepers, either hire a pro or put cages with food near the entry point or somewhere in the yard. I've had mice or rats for years in my wall that no one could figure out where was the opening-- until this year I noticed a small piece of the light switchplate was cracked off. Duct tape did the job! Therefore, when you figure out how the possum is getting in, fix it:-)
