The Poker Playing Skill of What Former Hamburger Stand Operator Almost Got Him Killed?
The only clue I will give today is that you have ALL heard of this person. If nobody gets the correct answer today, I will give a new clue tomorrow and a new clue on each subsequent day that no one guesses the correct answer.
I’m going to google it.. just giving you a head’s up because once a challenge is out there.. I have to complete it. It’s my unique OCD
Richard Nixon
This time I made it much tougher to solve than a quick google. This one will take some research.
Ray Kroc.
Curtis Sliwa?
So who was the eggmeister?
Dave Thomas?
Colonel Sanders! ;)
Hardee
Well, the hamburger stand part pretty much rules out Adm. Yamamoto. But if it had been a sushi bar...
Ray Kroc
Carl Karcher, founder of Carl’s Junior.
Curtis Sliwa was a McDonald’s manager at one time. He was shot and almost killed by Gotti family thugs in a stolen taxi, because he was trying to bust Gotti Don’t know about poker
Don’t recall the guys first name but was founder of Hardees. Being a lifelong Carolinian I’d heard some of the stories.
Also recall one of the first franchisees he had was Jerry Richardson, Carolina Panthers owner today.
UNBELIEVABLE!!! You got it. This means my Trivia question for tomorrow will have to be MUCH TOUGHER. I honestly thought it would take at least HOURS to figure this out than just a couple of minutes.
Yes, the correct answer if Richard Nixon. While a Navy supply officer on an island in the South Pacific during WWII, he ran a hamburger stand called Nick's Burgers which provided fresh hamburgers and beer for pilots passing through. As the supply officer he had a good ability to scrounge up all kinds of supplies including food.
Nixon's other great skill was poker. He never played much until entering the Navy but learned quickly because he needed the money. By the time he left the Navy he had earned several thousand dollars which back then was sufficient to kick off a political campaign which he did in 1946 when he used those poker winnings to win him a congressional seat.
So how did poker almost get him killed? After entering Congress, Nixon made a name for himself during the investigation of Alger Hiss. In 1950 he was elected senator from California and in 1952 he was chosen for Vice President by Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1958, as Vice President, Nixon traveled to South America on a goodwill tour. While in a motorcade in Caracas, his limo was almost overturned by a wild mob of Communists. Of course, he wouldn't even be in that position in the first place if he had not kicked off his political career using the winnings earned by his skill at poker.
And, as Paul Harvey would say...Now you know the REST of the story.
Good guess with Hardee but the correct answer is Richard Nixon. I wonder what poker hand Hardee was holding that caused him to bet his hamburgers shares away? Does anybody know?
So ... even after all these years, we can find out what Tricky Dick did as a young man ... but Barack Hussein Soetoro Odinga Soebarkah Whatever 0bama’s past (other than the Choom Gang) is still a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
