Rising Hollywood star Shailene Woodley joined lawmakers and digital retailers on Capitol Hill at a congressional briefing Tuesday in an effort to persuade the Obama administration to enact changes that would allow people to use food stamps online. The 24-year-old Snowden star said the issue is one that affects her own family and friends.
This issue stems beyond food. It is about social justice, equality amongst all, Woodley wrote in an Instagram post.
Healthy food should NOT be a privilege. healthy food is a RIGHT. and its our job to hold our government accountable to offer access to healthy food in ALL communities.
The actress was joined Tuesday by Reps. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Ted Lieu (D-CA), and Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH).
The lawmakers are attempting to combat so-called food deserts; according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 23 million Americans live in areas where there are no readily available opportunities to purchase healthy food.
A key step we can take to fight hunger, and combat food deserts is to make healthy, affordable good choices available to the greatest number of consumers, Rep. Ryan said in a press statement. I believe the federal government must advance to the level of todays technology and allow for the easier use of EBT benefits through online portals.
Rep. Ryan also personally thanked Woodley for attending Tuesdays briefing.
Critics contend that bringing the food stamp program online could result in new problems, and could exacerbate already existing problems including food stamp fraud, already a major concern and a common and costly issue, with just a few recent cases reported in Illinois, Ohio and Massachusetts.
The explosion of the food stamp program in recent years has resulted in what the Wall Street Journal in 2011 called a food stamp crime wave.

What, actors survive on food stamps these days. She says this issue affects her family and friends.
Whenever I hear or read the term ‘social justice’, I remember Balint Vazsonyi (may he rest in peace). He once offered a cash prize to anyone who could actually define ‘social justice’; and there were never any takers.
A Hungarian musician who became a political philosopher, Vazsonyi created ‘The Center for the American Founding’, whose aim was this:
“We advocate and practice discussion of national issues as they relate to America’s founding principles. For continued success, we believe this nation needs to return to the Rule of Law, Individual Rights, the Security of Property, and the same American Identity for all its citizens.”
His book, “America’s 30 Years War: Who is Winning?” is a must-read:

shes too much of a hippie chick ever to turn up clean and pretty..
The freakin’ clueless socialist idiots these days!!!
You’d think that John Hancock signed the Declaration of Dependence or something.
Thankfully I have no idea who Shailene Woodley is and I plan on keeping it that way.
When she moves on to insurgent and allegiant that's when you'll have to worry.
Want healthy food? great.
A bag of brown rice, a bag of beans and some spices.
May not be tasty but it is healthy. Anything else, get a job.
Nah. There’s no fixing trailer park face.
I’m sure a LOT of show biz peeps are on food stamps, because the ones that make big money are about 5% of the total, if that.
I’m sure you’ve seen the term “starving artist”.
One of my friend’s daughter is an actress who has had (I think) two roles in Broadway shows and the rest of the time she’s on welfare. It’s very common.
One entitlement calls another. If they get that they’ll be asking for free internet, then free laptops.
So what’s her stock portfolio look like for Blue Apron, etc., and the rest of these ridiculous businesses that are overpriced? I’d rather grow it myself or go to the farmer’s market.
If these people are incapable of getting an ID card to vote, how are they going to navigate the internet to eat?
I remember that actress married to “Ferris Buehler” was whining about the her family and food stamps some time during Bush43. Maybe it was the welfare reform under Clinton.
Jeff Bezos, and his online food delivery company Amazon Fresh, completely agree.
Jeff Bezos purchased the Washington Post in 2013, which is the first newspaper most Members of Congress read each morning.
His WP investment is already paying dividends!
I agree. This proposal is all about making it easier to scam the system with multiple EBT cards per recipient.
I say just the opposite. Put a chip in the EBT. Offer a one time cash incentive if the EBT holder will show government ID and allow their thumbprints programmed into the card.
Require that thumbprint at the checkout
Meanwhile, back at EBT central, search for duplicate fingerprints in the system and prioritize jnvestigations of those who won’t allow it
Electronic signatures stored on the card chip may be another route
Yet another “rising” boneheaded Hollyweird celebrity? I think we’ve got enough of those.
Having somebody pay for your “free lunch” is not a “right”.
Well I guess now we must have universal free internet.
