Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Best thing to come out of Nevada was I-80.
At least they'll keep the predator squirrells busy.
You forgot I-15 — and me. ;o]
I’m actually on my way out the door, too. I have to get my morphine and then head to Wally’s. Not my idea of fun, but it has to be done.
I’ll be sure to ask the Inert Blond Southern Bell about my hair. I’m sure he can tell me all I would ever need to know and then some about my particular hair type.
Good luck on your trip!
Back. And the Jerk has appropriated my parking spot again. He had it yesterday, when I got back, and since I’m getting the truck serviced tomorrow, he will take it then, too. So I will just wait until I hear him leave on Friday and take back my spot.
I don’t know why my back is hurting so much this morning, but I may have to take a second morphine to get it under control. Ick.
I have great respect for you. I-80 beats I-15 because it comes here.
Time to start leaving bags of coyote urine where his tires strike whenever you leave your spot vacant.
That’s only because it ends in 0. If it ends in 5, it will take you to Canada. ;o]
The crochety ol’ phart needs to get a life. He was told about a month ago, in a nice way, that his garbage should be left in the Dumpsters and not in the bin in the laundry room or the ones by the mail boxes. His response? “SHUT UP AND LEAVE ME ALONE!” Yah. Like that.
Oh, YES! LOL! Gandalf, you clever Magicker, you!
Gandalf! I’m so glad you’ve come! Jake couldn’t have held out much longer!
Jamie has rescheduled to 12:30, so now I have time to go to Walmart. I told her that her son can stay for supper and go to the pool with us if he wants, and I’ll get him home before dark.
I got several bags of frozen meat, as the fresh meat at Walmart is so tough and tasteless that I have to cook it in the crock pot.
It will last longer this way, anyway.
I need a haircut, desperately, but it will have to wait. Maybe I can squeeze enough out on payday. I hope. Though my AAA card is due for renewal on this payday, so that’s going to put a crimp in everything else.
I may have to let my natural gas bill go until September, in order to get the AAA paid. I don’t dare be without that card.
Well, I could use the insurance company’s service, but I would be constricted by state regulations. AAA is national, so I’m good with it. Especially since I’m planning to move to southern Utah within a year or so. I also had it in Arizona. The price is the same, depending on the plan. I have the middle plan because of the tow benefits of 200 miles.
We seem to have lost the ‘Nibiru is coming to get us’ crowd..
‘Tis a shame. Poking then in their inconsistencies is kinda fun. But of course now that they are not incumbered of being a nibiru apologist, it leaves them free to practice their mantras so that the ananoki-or-whatever-they-are won’t eat them.
Or whatever.. ;-)
I didn’t understand a word of that.
