New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

It seems innocent enough *now*, but wait until New Year’s Eve hits it!

I would like to see street food vendors grilling bacon burgers and pork sausages. You know how, when you grill, the smoke from the pork fat goes everywhere and deposits a coating of pork residue over everything?

Dave Barry’s end-of-year column. I could do a “Tax-chick and the Horde Year in Review,” but I’ve tried to forget a lot of it ...

That’s why I ask my husband to turn on the stove fan when he’s cooking.

Bill the Son is safely home. I’m going to put on my Official Cleaning Outfit (gray sweatpants and my Confederate Artillery t-shirt) and work on cleaning the laundry room in honor of the new washer, which will arrive Monday.

While I’m gone, everyone should look for a new thread.

It’s 42 degrees on my patio with 82% humidity. Now, I have to have another breathing treatment.

I went to the money store to get two rolls of quarters for laundry, and the girl behind the glass said, “I have one, so can it do for now?” I said, “No, I need TWO rolls of quarters.” Girl: “Oh. Well, I guess I’ll just have to go in the back and get one.” I thought, “You do that, Sweetie.”

That’s the first time someone at that store balked at giving me two rolls. *sheesh*

I wish the SNAP balance had been refilled at the same time as my deposit was, and I could go to Smith’s or Albertson’s and get some meat.

Which brand of washer did you get? I should have asked that in the last post. My bad.

Welcome home, Mr Elusive.

This is my new washer. It will be here on Monday afternoon. I already love it!

The laundry room is all cleaned now. I thought about painting, but I don’t really feel like it. I put up two more license plates: Texas and Pennsylvania.

Sounds good to me.

The store is closed today so would anyone care to join me in a hot toddy?

I’ve always loved Maytag. If I were in a position to buy a washer, that’s the brand I would get.

Good choice! <3

I would, if I had the toddy! I have everything else... But I need to get groceries, first, before I buy any adult beverages.

On an unrelated note..

I see on another thread here on FR that they are talking about snow on Donner Pass with discussions of the Donner party, roads closed and, of course, good skiing. I read through the entire thread and found it interesting that no one mentioned that Donner Pass also traps trains (well, not until I did..)

In 2005 the eastbound Amtrak California Zephyr got stuck on the pass but the train and passengers were rescued rather quickly. I wonder if Amtrak is still using the Donner Pass route. Something to check on..

Quick rescue was not the case for the Southern Pacific's City of San Francisco in 1952. I actually do remember hearing that story on the news back then (it happened a couple of days before my 5th birthday - er, wait a minute - maybe I only think I was almost 5.. ;-)

Anyone else remember this?
